Subject: Cramps while swimming
Had a long swim scheduled yesterday. While swimming I got a cramp in the bottom of my foot. It was easy enough to stand up in the pool and massage it out, but I was wondering how I would have handled it if I were in deep water.

Suggestions?

Cramps while swimming are my first sign I haven't recovered from my previous workout. Taper then rest for at least one day before every race. If you're rested you are far less likely to get cramps.

Very common. Best way to avoid is to train enough distance to not get them. But if you do, just float on your back and massage them out. I find that I can usually swim through them.

I usually don't get them until close to 2,000M into a swim. Of course in a pool, you can usually get rid of them by pushing off the wall slowly, or something like that. With practice you can swim through them. Is hydration a factor in these type cramps? Potassium deficiency (have a banana!)?

I usually get cramps especially when I push off the wall too hard. Or sometimes when I force my feet to point backwards too much.

This is pretty much the most common complaint when someone is increasing distance and/or time in the pool.

Yeah, you can try bananas, electrolytes, etc

But you can also ignore them, don't push off quite as hard and you'll quit getting cramps after your body gets used to pointing your toes for that long.

It'll take 2-3 weeks but they'll go away.

I am training for my first IM and lately I have been getting cramps in my calves. I am a heavy salt sweater and I was wondering if that has anything to do with it?
