I hope I am not too late. Doing IMAZ next week. Have a QR sleeveless wetsuit that is a couple of years old. It is the ultra John with the silver "QR" and pink "ultra john" on the chest.

At any rate, I got a set of ProMotion tri sleeves that I was going to use with the sleeveless.

I was reading this morning that the suits over 5mm thick are banned as of January 1.

I can not find any specs on the ultra John to see how thick it is so I don't know if the tri sleeves and QR combined are over 5mm.

Help!

I don't have a wetsuit, so maybe this isn't practical, but why don't you just measure the thickness?

Thanks, tried that but it's not possible.

I've never seen anybody having their wetsuit measured at any race. So, unless your wetsuit is so obviously thick to the naked eye, then you should be fine.

Having said that, if you want to make sure you're wetsuit is 100% ok, then perhaps get in touch with a store that sells QR wetsuits or a QR sales rep, and they should be able to help you. And same with ProMotion about their sleeves.

I know a "wet suit check" sounds insane, but I I'll tell you this. Standing near the waters edge at IMTX 2012 before chipping in, a race official starts telling the guy next to me that what he is wearing is illegal and if he doesn't take it off, he will be DQ'd. It got pretty testy between the two and the official even put his lips up to the material and blew through it. He reiterated his threat that if he jumped in the water, he would be DQd. The guy jumped in and the race official radioed his number in as A DQ.

"Blowing through" the material is a way to ensure that a swimskin is legal for non wetsuit swims. For WTC races, all swimskins have to be 100% textile (not rubber) and if you can blow through the material that ensures that it is legal.

Knowing nothing about that suit but owning a number of dive, surf and swim wetsuits from 1 to. 7mm thick, I doubt the QR is 5 mm

I remember seeing a list a year or two ago that showed the illegal wetsuits, but can't seem to find it.

I would not just wing it, start making phone call to find out if it is legal. The guy racked across from me at Eagleman last year got a shock when the official walked down the line and stopped at him; he was told his helmet was illegal and if he wore it he would be DQ'ed. After 45 minutes of freaking out he found someone that had an extra helmet, so he was able to race.

Would not dought the officials have a list of illegal wetsuits at the start and watch people go in the water.

Just realized you were asking about the thickness on the body of both combined.  Duh.   And just looked and see the "tri sleeves" are really a full upper body 1mm suit (on the body).  You have a problem if the body of the QR is 5mm.  And wearing the sleeves makes it look like you are layering to get around the rules so it may call attention to you.

I'd get this sorted out and not rely on showing up and having no issues...

I had the Ultrajohn and remembered the top part being the least thick, but I agree you should check.

Found this FAQ:

Q: I have an older _________, where can I get information on it?

A: Visit your QR dealer or email QR model name and details about the bike in question to [email protected]

Hopefully they could also answer wet suit questions.

I did get an aswer, sort of, from QR. They said none of their wet suits are 5mm anywhere. We shall see. I'll bring my LS, that I don't like very much. Ill try to get an opinion from an official, before the event. If it is too thick, which at this point I don't think is, I'll fall back to sleeveless or go with my full sleeve after swim practice on sat.

Curious.  Why wouldn't you just go with the full sleeve suit?  It's not going to be slower or colder than a john with sleeves under, and will probably take less time to get off.

I think the only wetsuit that was illegal was the DeSoto Rover. Once the Rover came out USAT and WTC put in the no thicker than rules. I don't believe any other tri wetsuit companies had moved to that thicker type before the ban came thru. It hurt DeSoto and those that had bought them. DeSoto was very generous to those who bought them and they then became illegal.

I've never seen anyone checking wetsuits at an IM. If they did I suspect they'd be checking out DeSotos.

Although it fits, removing it is an event in itself. It's a PITA to get it over my cankles.

Ever seen the wetsuit strippers?  They'll have that sucker off you before you know it.  Just make sure to hold onto your tri shorts when they do it

In that case, let me tell you about the best thing that ever happened to my wet suit.  I cut about 4 inches off each leg and it was magical!  It made NO difference in comfort/warmth/speed and slipped off like I was oiled.

Being lean isn't all wine and roses. The reduction in body fat has, unfortunately, also made me a slower swimmer. I have also become a real wimp in cold of any kind.
