Regular 118 Marietta, GA | Subject: Triple Brick workout? Does anyone have any experience with doing Triple Bricks as part of the training prep for an IM? I've been re-reviewing various plan iterations for next year and have found a few references to doing Triple Bricks. As a BOP type of competitor, I am looking to do a little better than the last two IM's and, of course, finish. Just looking for input. Anyone working on their off season training yet? |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Triple Brick workout? Triple Brick as in swim, bike, and run??? If so, those are good for race rehearsals and not much else (just like the usual bike-run brick). There's no magical triathlon specific fitness gained from doing bricks . |

I'd just as soon go do a sprint tri if I really wanted to practice that much at once. For a BOP athlete who wants to improve (and well anybody, really), would say to look much more heavily at training ability in the individual sports than any type of brick. Learn to get a good handle on executing your training sessions throughout the week, and for week after week. |

Veteran 930 Morgan Hill, California | Subject: RE: Triple Brick workout? I did one in getting ready for my first IM last year. In looking back, I think it did help from a mental point of view, but not sure how much it helped from a physical point of view. For my first IM, there was so much unknown, so having that long day of all three under my belt helped reduce, a little, some of the anxiety. Didn't remove it though. This year, I didn't do an IM distance, but did do HIMs. Other than racing, including some shorter stuff, I didn't do any bricks. For me, I had a great season, including PRs at both the Oly and HIM distance. So, I don't think bricks are required, for me. What I did find that works was being consistent, and having more hard days. I think being consistent, and having the base under me, allowed me to put in more hard days, and those helped. Hard days for me meant one day a week of some type of speed work (usually mile repeats) and a day where I would ride to work, run at lunch, and ride home. |

Expert 1159 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Triple Brick workout? My understanding of the term triple brick is back-to-back-to-back brick workouts (ie bike 3 times and run 3 times). I've not done it but a couple guys I train with do them as one of their last big training days about 4 weeks out and swear by them. Typically something like a 40k bike and 5k run each time. |

IMO, there is nothing magic about the physiological adaptations that result from bricks, but there are a lot of good reasons to do them. In the case of double or triple bricks, I like them for newer athletes who are struggling a little with learning pacing, or building mental toughness.

Curious - was this your last big weekend workout (eg 3ish weeks out) or did you do it earlier? |

I am not experienced and just going to do my first full IM in 2014. With the training programs I am considering and after talking to a coach it appears that I will be doing a few races (1-2 sprints, 1-2 Olympics, and a HIM) to get ready for my big race. I would think, if anything, the triple brick workouts would build your confidence (hopefully) but not sure they would do much otherwise. Not sure what others would say, though. And, like I said, I am new to this distance. |

Would actually be a really cool race event to challenge people's mental toughness! |
