Subject: my friend died in cycling crash last Tuesday

A co-worker and friend of mine Ed Praitis was killed last Tuesday on a lunchtime ride with his cycling team. He hit a patch of wet pine needles on a downhill turn and slid out into oncoming traffic. He died instantly in the crash.  Ed leaves behind two sons and his wife. The world lost a good man last Tuesday and I am honored to have known him.

I post this as a reminder to be as careful as you can be out there, doing the sport you love.  Like my own crash in September, Ed's crash while sudden and unexpected was clearly related to road conditions. And Ed was a highly experienced cyclist. Wind, rain, debris in the road, wet leaves, traffic - each of these can contribute to tragedy. We can't just give up on doing things outside because they might be dangerous, but we can choose where and when to ride or run or swim. So be careful out there.

May your friend rest in peace and his family be comforted.

It is a good reminder though. Now that I commute to work, I definitely take it easy when the roads are wet and remind myself that I'm not in full training mode all the time. Even last Saturday, I thought I was being a little chicken to pull out of the pace line during my group ride when it started to rain. They weren't doing anything crazy, and were taking the turns with care, but I could feel that some people in the group wanted to go faster and I didn't want to get forced into it. That portion of the ride included a few 90 degree turns where washing out meant washing out in front of cars. Even though I pulled out of the line, I still got my training in. I took the corners gingerly then chased hard on the straighter portions of road.

<sniff>  so sorry to hear.  When I hear about the wife and children, it hurts even more.

Such a wrong result of trying to be fit and healthy.

I heard about Ed's crash on Thursday and read about it last night.. My prayers are with Ed's family and the PCP team. Do you know if there's a memorial ride planned?
