Event warmup:

What an amazing event. The open water swim was not what I was prepared for. Nice size waves and tons of punches and kicks to the face! That part was expected and part of the experience. The whole day went much better than I had even imagined. My goal was to finish under 13 hours. I finished with a time of 11 hours and 50 minutes!!!! I was so excited to hear my name called when I crossed the finish line. It went so well I signed up the next morning for 2014!!!
Swim
  • 1h 19m 40s
  • 4156 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

the swim was so intimidating. Huge chop and cold. Was glad it happened. Added to the overall IRONMAN experience
What would you do differently?:

I would find some way to get some open water training in before the race. All my swims were done in the Lifetime Fitness pool
Transition 1
  • 08m 40s
Comments:

outside of catching my breathe for a quick second it went much smoother than expected.
What would you do differently?:

I would put some more body glide on under my trisuite before heading out.
Bike
  • 5h 36m 6s
  • 112 miles
  • 19.99 mile/hr
Comments:

I really enjoyed the bike. This was my first 112 mile ride and it went perfect. I had no technical issues along the way and drank just enough. I was very happy with the ride.
What would you do differently?:

I would push a little harder on the bike knowing my legs would be there in the run. I held back a little due to my fear of my first marathon.
Transition 2
  • 05m 46s
Comments:

I flew through this transition! Everything went smoothly. Wearing the trisuit and not having to change clothes made this very easy.
What would you do differently?:

I would not change anything about this transition.
Run
  • 4h 39m 49s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

First 14 miles were great. I hit the wall just after the 14 mile marker. I did not handle my nutrition correctly on the run and my mind starting taking over on how hard this was. Next year I will be more prepared.
What would you do differently?:

better nutrition and hydration in the first 13 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

hugged my wife and son then sat for about 5 minutes then made my way to the Pizza tent. No warm down

What limited your ability to perform faster:

in-experience

Event comments:

What an amazing RACE! I would recommend this to anyone thinking of doing there first Ironman. I will be back for 2014 and might just make it an annual event!

Often it makes sense to race slower in order to finish faster and at the same time have a more enjoyable Ironman Triathlon experience.
