9 | Subject: 70.3 Training Calendar Looking for the wisdom of the BT forums here as I step up my triathlon life. I'm still very much a beginner; but after a year that saw lots of improvement in many areas, meeting some race goals, and gaining more and more knowledge on equipment and nutrition, I am looking to step up to a 70.3 race at the end of September 2014. As I am new to planning out an entire year's calendar, what are some opinions on how to go about this? I just ran a half marathon; and am moving into an off season phase of training. I'll be spending the winter months trying to get stronger and faster, correcting some muscle imbalances, etc. I am aiming to have my first race of 2014 be a local sprint triathlon; and am wondering how then to shape up my year for training and racing to ultimately end with the late September 70.3 Any thoughts, ideas, insights, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Regular 234 Virginia | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Calendar I stepped up to a September 70.3 this season after having done only one Oly and a slew of sprint tris over the past several years. Last season I did an Oly in June and a few sprints over the summer. I have used the training plans in Joe Friel's book "Your Best Triathlon," and have had some success with that. I believe I started his plan in March, with mostly base work. He calls this the "Prep" block of training. Anyway, I would recommend taking a look at his stuff. Good luck! |

It worked well for me and I'm planning to use it again this coming year for 3# HIM in June/July & August. Biggest problem I had in my 1st HIM was getting off the bike after a hard ride (lots of hill climbing) and then trying to run. So, after every bike ride I'll get off and run even just a couple miles just to get my legs used to it. In planning your 2014 season aim for a Sprint as early in the season as reasonably possible then an Olympic about halfway between your Sprint and your HIM. Its not necessary but for experience it is valuable. Last year I saw an advert for the Key West Triathlon. It really looked like something I'd like to try some day but its a long ways away from me. |

9 | Subject: RE: 70.3 Training Calendar The sprint is April 28th, and the HIM is September 28th; so I've got 5 months in between that I'd like to do an Olympic length one in. There are a multitude of options available in my part of the world; but I want to A) Fit it where it makes sense in my training plan and B) Not "too" close to the 70.3 |
