10 speed vs 11 speed- What would you do

Extreme Veteran 418 | Subject: 10 speed vs 11 speed- What would you do I've been looking at a new bike. The problem I am running into is 10 speed 105 vs 11 speed Ultegra. . The difference in over all purchase price is only $300. So The other concern is I have a set of 50mm Bontrager wheels that are 9/10 speed hub that I would have to look at replacing the free hub to a 11 speed. I've read issues about converting a 9-10 speed wheel to 11 speed. Should I just stick with the conventional 10 speed and save a few bucks and potential headaches? |

Nothing wrong with keeping it simple if you're already set up for 10 speed, maybe that's the way to go unless you're looking to upgrade to 11 speed. I wouldn't think you would have to replace the hub, just the cassette, which shouldn't be that expensive; |

I didn't have any issues switching my powertap wheels to 11-speed and they are working great. I like Ultegra way better than 105 (although I just bought a 10-speed CX bike with 105...). All that said, you should be able to buy 10-speed cassettes for many years. If it's not going to break the bank, go with Ultegra. Otherwise, get the 105 and be happy. |

I was hanging out on the other site classifieds and found a brand new FLO hub+11 spd freewheel for $85 and am having my wheel changed out. I didn't have the option of a 11spd free-wheel change so had to get a new hub. No headaches other than spending a few more bucks! If your hub is 11-spd freewheel compatible then its a swap and redish. |

That way you can change out the rear wheel whenever your ready.

You can see Shimano's progression from 7 and 8 speed all the way up to 11 speed across all their groupsets here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimano If history is any indicator, we can probably expect Shimano 105 11 speed in a year or two. Once that happens, pretty much every brand new race worthy bike on the market will be decked out with 11 speed by 2016. Assuming SRAM will adopt a similar progression (they have so far) to stay on a level playing field marketing wise. So the change is coming eventually. There really isn't any "need" to change to 11 speed if you don't want to...but the market will change to 11 speed regardless of if you need it or not. So if you aren't fully invested in 10 speed at the moment, I would strongly consider moving to 11 speed now. I don't plan to make the jump for another couple of years...simply because I already have a lot of 10 speed stuff and I don't plan to buy another road/tri bike for a couple of years. |

I liked the paint scheme on the '12 much better, and 1 extra gear didn't really matter to me that much. My old frame was shot so I couldn't really wait around to see what the '14 series with 11-speed would look like. I'm happy with the 10-speed Ultegra. I'm sure I would have been happy with 11-speed, too. I was happy with my 9-speed DA that it replaced. I think the 9-speed DA had a slightly higher shifting/tunability quality than the Ultegra 10-speed does. So as someone else pointed out, if I were in your shoes I'd contemplate the 105 vs. Ultegra question more than the 10 vs 11 speed question. If you can afford the Ultegra, it's probably worth the extra $ over the 105. I could have afforded DA on the new bike, but the price differential from the Ultegra to DA was just way too high to justify any quality difference in my mind. I don't recall the price differential being so high between those two when I purchased the DA a decade ago. |

For $400 ($300 for the Ultegra and another $100 for the free hub body), I would get the Ultegra. He said the RD shifts very smooth, better than 10-spd DA RD and the improvement with the front derailleur shifting is vastly better than any of the 10 speed FD. He said it may also be part of the new 6800 crank design, said the chain simply snaps onto the rings. Sat is my fitting and I'm already glad I decided to spend the extra $ on the Ultegra 6800 parts. |

In my case I had to get a new hub to replace my existing, I found a new FLO Cycling hub on the other site and bought the 11-spd freehub for it from FLO. The LBS was able to use my existing spokes and redished it, so I avoided the $ for new spokes. This route was 1/3rd the cost of a new FLO 90, that'll have to wait! If I could have gone the freehub replacement route then only a redish would have been needed with it. If your wheel/hub is already 11-spd compatible nothing changes. |

It might be worth looking into using a Campi cassette on your Bontrager race wheels. Campi cassettes are compatible with Shimano/SRAM drivetrains but Shimano/SRAM cassettes aren't compatible with Campi. |

There is a super easy way to get your 10-speed wheels to work essentially perfectly with 11-speed shimano drivetrains. And, in most cases, for free. The shop switches them back and forth from 10 to 11 speed freehub easily. I haven't paid much attention to it so I don't know what the parts cost. I know we got our Cycleops PT wheel switched from 10 to 11 speed freehub for 60 bucks. 10 speed wtih be as obsolete as 9 speed is now in a few years. I'd go with the 11 speed Ultegra for a few more bucks. |

This is the cheapest option and allows upgrading in the future. Moving to 11 speed is not going to make you faster. Cheaper prices should occur in the future as things filter down to the lower tier components. |
