Subject: Anyone else run out of gear on the trainer?
I started using trainerroad about a month ago and I love the program. My problem is I run out of gear on the trainer. I am riding my P2 with standard gearing. My trainer is a cheapo cycleops mag trainer. It has an adjuster knob on the back of the trainer but I don't notice any difference in any of the knob settings. I did the 20 min FTP test today and my FTP was me riding around 93 rpm's in the hardest gear I have. I was working hard but I felt like I could have possibly used another gear to push harder. Anyone else have this issue? Any way to fix it other than buying a better trainer?

There is no chance I could run out of gears on either of my trainers - I have a KK Road Machine and a Cycleops Fluid2.   Even doing 10s sprints at 900+ watts I still have at least a couple of cogs left on the cassette.

Ditto.  The Fluid2 has an exponential power curve.  There is no way that I would run out of gears.

The issue is probably that you have a magnetic trainer instead of a fluid.  As Arend implied, you'd have to be a total beast to spin out on a Fluid 2 or Road Machine.

I have the Mag trainer also. Even though it may not be real obvious at first, there is a difference in the settings, especially at higher rpms.

When turning the knob, the highest resistance, where I keep mine, is when the the knob assembly moves closest to the flywheel. If you look close, you can see it move.

I have the cyclops mag also. It has remote adjustment. I usually run it in the middle, perhaps I should be running a bit more resistance? I usually do sufferfest in almost the hardest gear, if I increased the resistance I could use a lesser gear

i'm using the KK Pro and im not close to running out. Since your running out on the mag it may be time for a upgrade.

Nope, no way I could run out of gear on my Cycleops.

Nope, I don't think I could ever run out of gear on my KK Road Machine. Get a fluid trainer, either KK or Cyclops.

Perhaps a stupid question, but is there something actually touching your back wheel? e.g. the trainer is engaged against the wheel?
I don't see how you could be running of gears unless you are spinning in thin air.

based on the responses above it must be the type of trainer I am using. I tighten the back wheel per instructions and there is plenty of "traction." Once I get it spun up I am riding in the biggest gear I have for FTP efforts. I am going to invest in a fluid trainer and that should fix the problem.

Same as below, i have a P2 on KK road machine.  On trainerroad I've peaked out around 1100 watts, sustained 1014 for 5 seconds (50/11 @ about 108 for a cadence), 825 for 10, and 625 for 20. That's usually when my calves cramp up at maximal effort, and you can see the very rapid decay. The exponential resistance is the key... fluid trainers are the way to go

I've got the same trainer - I run out of oxygen way before I run out of gears.
