Pre-race routine:

Honey Stinger waffle, iced coffee w sugar and LF milk, 1/2 banana, woke up a bit later than I should have.
Event warmup:

walking almost 1 mile
Run
  • 2h 23m 20s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

since this was a fun race and not a serious race, and since it was my season ender, I decided to go a little harder during my easy 2/3. I shot for increasing my pace every single mile with the last 5k @ best effort. The result was that the race was very, very hard. But that was also because of the humidity.
What would you do differently?:

I would stick with a first SLOW third at a steady slow pace before increasing pace. At the end of the race I was unable to increase further and if I'd stayed in the 11's for 5 miles or so, then worked into 10s, perhaps the last few miles could have been 9s.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking back about a mile.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HEAT AND HUMIDITY! horrible!

Event comments:

Has really become a world-class race in the past few years with bag drop, very organized, good giveways and finally improved tech tee. Just need to do a better job of organizing the free beer line!

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
