Pre-race routine:

Got Pat squared away, it was his first race. My heat was number 6, so I had to wait an hour till I got to go. Pat was heat 13, so he had even longer than me. Pre race meeting, walked to the exits, rode my bike for a few.
Event warmup:

little bike ride, light jog, usual nervous dancing about.
Swim
  • 06m 11s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 33s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had an absolutely awesome swim. Completely effortless. I usually blow it all on the swim in this race because it is in the pool and I can see my competition. The girl who was suppoed to be in my lane never showed, so I had the whole thing to myself. Took it out easy and stayed consistent, flip turns at every wall. I ended up 1st out of the pool by a good margin!
What would you do differently?:

push a little harder, maybe too conservative.
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

After a good swim, I yelled "SWIMMER OUT!" and took off through the doors, across the parking lot, to the bike. Got the shoes on, helmet on, glasses, etc. and took off. Didn't do the best mount of my life but hey, can't have everything.
What would you do differently?:

Better mount.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 12s
  • 21.75 miles
  • 18.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I love this bike course, I really do. This year it seemed particularly easy to me. My climbing was a LOT better this year, definitely. Took a gel at about mile 15, but didn't manage to tear it properly and got raspberry hammer gel all over my hands and handlebars in the subsequent oozing. Tried to rinse with water bottle to little avail. Cadence was my focus for the day, and I think I did pretty well. Had good gear changes, felt fast. Sat and spun up the hill, caught a few people from the wave before me. Felt really strong and happy, HR was good throughout...mostly high 160's.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder...was maybe a bit too conservative on the bike, since I bonked hardcore in the run last year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

good transition...don't like where they had the bike out portion, i had to run down a line of cars to get back into the actual transition itself. Opted for no socks again. Saw Pat coming into transition as I was putting my shoes on. He had a great swim and made the cut off by 2 minutes!! Saw him off on his bike and I took off running.
What would you do differently?:

Plan out my entrace a little better.
Run
  • 29m 39s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Had an AWESOME run. felt loose, stride felt big and flowing and free. No dead legs either (could have pushed more on that bike!). I was happy for the shade and overcast skies though, was feeling a bit warm. Race belt kept riding up, so finally i just let it sit under my boobs like a race number bra *ANNOYING!*. Was really quite happy with this run.

***EDIT**** Even happier with this run! under 30! YESSSSSSS.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder, again too conservative.
Post race
Warm down:

stretched, walked around, had water. Put my bike in the car and waited for pat. Saw him come into t2 looking strong! Got his picture as he was finishing. Waited around for results. Just out of the medals.

BUT! I did look at last year's results:
2005: 2:11:52
2004: 2:26.37

So I've dropped 40 minutes from my race since 2004, and 20 from last year!
Well chuffed! I really want to see my run time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not pushing hard enough.

Event comments:

For being a tiny YMCA sprint race, it is ridiculously well organized and well run. The RD's for this race are super, I wish they'd put on more races. Good tshirts again. Very happy that they have a title sponsor now. This race brings out such a mix of near-pros and absolute beginners...its awesome. Super positive community as well and a beautiful place to hold a race.

nice race! i had to laugh about the race number 'bra' - that's happened to me too! the wierd thing is, it only happens SOME of the time, even though the belt and the outfit remain the same. anyway, congrats on a good race!
