Yup today I tried my clipless pedals and fell off before the end of my road - does that mean I am a real cyclist now ;-). Got straight back on and practised a bit more will do more tomorrow before venturing into busier roads.

We all fall. Getting back up and starting again is the important thing. If you have a bike trainer you could mount your bike to it, safely practice clipping in and dismounting. Good luck!

Everyone falls....you hope it is like what you are describing.....where the only thing hurt is your pride.
Get up keep at it....will be second nature before you know it.

Nothing we all haven't done at least once. This past summer i hit some sand which resulted in me hitting a curb then bouncing off that curb with my elbow...broken. Took a few weeks right in the middle of training but a lesson was learned albeit the hard way. Could have been worse...just keep going.

Welcome to the club.

I hate falling and will take my foot out long before I need to.  I feel better safe than sorry.

You did better than I did my first time in clipless pedals. I had my husband go out with me to catch me. Well I got one foot clipped in and promptly fell over. Neither my hubby or I expected me to go down that quick. Lol. I did pretty well after that but I did fall again. Although the next time was at a stop sign. It sucks but you do get the hang of it. Good luck on your next attempt!

Exactly. Got my first set as a teen and tested them on an icy road. Fell twice and then put my bike inside.

We should invent the Laugh In Arte Johnson tricycle ribbon/award/badge as a rite of passage for one's first slow-motion fall!

Just got back from X-ray.  Yup, been there, fell there, and will likely fall again.  Got away with just bruising this time

I fell on a spin bike.  But that's cuz the pedal broke of the crank.  My shoe was still clipped in so I'm counting that as a fall.  LOL

Welcome to the club.

Just remember first-falls are usually more fun than first crashes.

Last summer, at least 25 years after putting on my first set of clipless pedals, I unclipped the wrong foot and went down.

It will happen again.

It will be just as embarrassing as the first time.

It will happen again.... when you least expect it.

Piece of advice. DON'T try to catch yourself or break your fall by putting your arm out. That is how you break collarbones. Just roll with the fall when you reach the inevitable. Far to many people don't know how to fall to break their own fall.

I once hog-tied myself with my shoelaces running on a treadmill in front of the entire gym. That was 10 years ago and my pride still aches.

You'll get the hang of it.

I feel several times while learning to ride clipless.  One was very nasty as I stalled out while out of the saddle on a steep hill and forgot to clip out.  I was very banged up.  After that I gave myself a deadline - 10 days w/ no falls or I'd switch back.  I made it!  You will too.

This thread coincides perfectly with me looking at new shoes and pedals for sale. What do they say...'you have to get worse to get better'.
