Age Group Rank = 7/11
Pre-race routine:

Rain forecast but was dry all day.
up at 5:30 am, breakfast cereal, got to race at 7 am and parking lot already crowded. Slow to get transition set up--first race of the year. Not feeling great or v. confident.
Cold and windy. Decided to leave my tights and castelli windbreaker on for run and bike. Castelli jacket bad idea for bike. I would have been fine with a long sleeve tech shirt over my uniform. Lesson learned
Event warmup:

Ran a little around the parking lot.
Run
  • 27m 36s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good. Ran with Erin Miller which was great. I got hot with the jacket on--next time, wear tight tech long sleeve
What would you do differently?:

No wind breaker
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

as usual
Bike
  • 1h 14m 17s
  • 20 miles
  • 16.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt like crap. Stupid jacket was like a sail in the wind and I was very slow and worked way too hard. Not a fun bike for anyone but I could feel the drag.
Stomach cramping by the first hills--should have eaten a GU out of transition but it was too dangerous on Pinecone and chaotic. When I finally ate it in St Stephen, I felt better. Drank my whole aerobottle on the ride--filled with Skatch labs
What would you do differently?:

Tight shirt on bike
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Trying to get all my clothes off was tough though about the same time as T1!
Run
  • 28m 28s
  • 3.1 kms
  • 09m 11s  min/km
Comments:

So glad to get off the bike. As usual slow up the hill but felt good going up the St Francis one and started to pass people.
Amazing that I had no cramping during this.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

stupid huge jacket on bike.

Best runs--at least they felt the best I've ever felt on this course. I can feel my run improving even if the times aren't. Pretty sure I was slower overall than the first time I did this race.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

My first duathlon was a success. I had so many fears before the race but none of those fears happened. And when it was all over, I felt I had accomplished something big.

"I was wondering if this is a sensible approach? Should I get "better" on short distance and then move to something longer or do what I want if I feel I can do it whatever the time?"
