My wife would like to do IM 70.3 Luxembourg this summer (the trip will be a 50th b'day gift to her). She is a BOMOP HIM finisher (7 hours-ish) and normally rides an entry level roadie with clip-ons.

We could buy her bike for what it would cost to ship it there, so we're inclined to want to rent a roadie for the couple days we'll be at the race site. However, neither of us have had much luck finding rentals online in Lux. She's emailed the race director, but in the meantime, I thought I'd put this out there to see if anyone had any suggestions. Really not looking for a high end ride...I'll bring her fit measurements along from her usual ride...that'll certainly get her through 3:25 or so of cycling on race day. Just need something we can pick up somewhere in the vicinity that doesn't cost more than FedEx'ing 23 lbs of roadie from LA to Europe...

Isn't bringing bike on plane cheaper than shipping when going to Europe?

I loved visiting Luxemburg back when I was there in the 80s.

That's a thought...it wasn't cheaper when we traveled cross country for a race, but maybe it would be for Europe.

taking the bike on the airplane will cost at least $300, plus the hassle. I think you are right to just rent. ...but do bring her saddle with you. go to craigslist and see if there is anything other the bikes section - if so, post your question there about renting.

Check airline bike fee prices. Some Int'l airlines are more reasonable than other. I wonder if you could fly Iceland Air which used to fly to Luxembourg.

You may want to post on ST. Sometimes someone local can find a bike to borrow or rent plus more Europeans on ST than here.

Iceland Air is only $56/each way for bikes.

They used to fly out of Chicago via Iceland then onto Luxembourg.

We're probably going via Air Tahiti Nui (great fare...nonstop LAX-Paris... rental car to Lux from CDG), but not booking until we resolve the bike issue. As was the case with SWA in 2011 for Timberman, the bike box I've got is over the allowable max for checked luggage...has to go air freight (almost every box and case on the market is over limit, by the way...found that out in 2011). I can take an oversized additional bag for $150, but only if it isn't over the max allowed size (68" L+W+H) for baggage.

They measured your box on SWA?

I have never seen them measure and I have flown many times with my bike.
