Tri-ing for Children’s

Precipitation
Total Time = 46m 53s
Overall Rank = 26/193
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 2/8
Pre-race routine:

Ate an early breakfast around 5AM for a 7:30AM race start. Had some race goo mixed in with water about 7AM.
Event warmup:

Stretched out on the beach and felt very limber until the announcement was made that the race was being delayed due to weather. Eventually retreated to the first aid tent, where I rode out the bad weather for the next two hours. Pizza arrived approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the race. I ate approximately 10 pieces and only stopped because they ran out of cheese and I didn't want to burp pepperoni during the race.
Swim
  • 07m 14s
  • 265 meters
  • 02m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not too bad for not having trained, although the absence of a wetsuit was definitely noticed in the water. I did a fair portion of this on my back to conserve energy
What would you do differently?:

Maybe train once or twice prior to the event.
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Not having a wetsuit on really sped up this transition, even though I took my time lacing up my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe buy those quick laces
Bike
  • 20m 32s
  • 7 miles
  • 20.45 mile/hr
Comments:

This portion was just a blur. I think I was passed by maybe two guys the entire way and I stayed within view of them, which I think helped me pick up my pace. I started having some pretty serious pizza burps through here, but the relatively cool air and wet conditions made for a tolerable ride. The pizza made it impossible to take in any fluids, for fear of puking.
What would you do differently?:

Not eat pizza prior to competing
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

The only thing that slowed me down here was taking off my rash guard, but I thought that might end up saving me time through the run portion
What would you do differently?:

Not too much.
Run
  • 16m 48s
  • 1.56 miles
  • 10m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

They had cones throughout the course and I started out running out of the transition area (purely for the looks) and then started alternating between a run and fast walk every two cones. I noticed my run pace between the first and second cone started trailing off, so I decided to alternate every other cone instead. My pace seemed a full minute quicker than my last event, where I didn't walk at all. I seemed to do a little better in that format and will probably continue to do it in future events.
What would you do differently?:

Go every other cone immediately
Post race
Warm down:

I just walked around and got something to drink, once I felt comfortable that I wouldn't puke it back up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not really doing any training to speak of since my last event and downing 10 slice of pizza right before the start of the event.

Event comments:

You can't do much about weather delays, but our wave would've been out of the water and onto the bikes if the lifeguards were informed of the correct start time. It's a first year event, so I and I'm sure most everyone else is willing to cut them some slack. I did like the Clydesdale option for the Half Sprint, as well as the half sprint option for those of us who came in sans training.

So that's where all the pizza went!

Nice race - especially the bike.

Thanks. I'm going to give Devil's Lake a shot and actually try to work in some training beforehand. I'll lay off the pre-race pizza as well.
