Subject: Shimano Rear Derailleur Question
I recently broke the rear derailleur hangar on my road bike. As part of the "incident", the derailleur was pulled into the back spokes and got a little mangled). The shop was able to straighten the rear derailleur and install a new hangar to get the bike working again, but recommended I start looking into a new rear derailleur.

I'd like to be self-sufficient and make this repair/replacement myself, so I'm looking online for the new rear derailleur.

Currently, I have the Shimano 105 RD-5700-GS rear derailleur (http://tinyurl.com/opeotyn). I can't find the RD-5700-GS in local stores or online (I've ordered it from Performance Bike, but it has been back-ordered for 5 weeks). I can, however find the RD-5701-GS at Amazon.

I'm curious what could be the difference, if any, between these two models?

Any help would be appreciated.

looks like you'll be ok.

Just make sure it accepts your current gear ratio's (biggest cog in the back)

How can you see that it is okay? The maximum cassette teeth size?

That's part of it… the derailleur has a max capacity which is (large ring-small ring) + (largest cog-smallest cog).

Shimano has a fairly standard nomenclature for their components:

RD - Rear Derailleur

57xx - family (5700 series are current generation 10 speed 105. The last two digits may increment as running changes are incorporated into an existing product [such as changes made to accommodate updated Flight Deck computer controls] or to indicate a variation of a product [such as a triple or compact crankset], but will indicate that the parts are compatible with the rest of the 'family')

GS - medium cage (SS = short cage, SGS = long cage)

In other words, the 5701 probably has some minor bug fix, but is otherwise identical to your existing RD

When I switch one wheelset for another, the rear derailleur needs to be adjusted because the rear wheel on each holds the cassette in a different position. Where do I start?

A bike is NOT a piece of metal with a couple of wheels at either end and a steering thing to stop you running over old ladies. No! ... a bike is a space-age “weapon of mass confusion.”
