Subject: Olympic Distance Dissertation Questionnaire
If you have completed an olympic distance triathlon and wish to be part of an investigation I am carrying out as part of my dissertation, I would be very grateful if as many people as possible could spare a couple of minutes to answer this short survey. Thanks!!

Yes, assumed it meant tri training and not any kind of regular endurance sport training or my answer would have been something like 360 months!

The questions seemed very generic.  What is it that you are trying to find/show with this study?

I agree--they looked like some of the psychological profile questions in the Triathlete's Training Bible. I wondered if maybe she was going to try to correlate best times to responses to the questions. That's problematic--while psychological factors will clearly affect how well someone performs within the limits of their current fitness, the actual times would have a lot more to do with fitness and race execution. A pro could have a horrible race (for him) and finish in under 2 hours, while an older, challenged, or seriously overweight athlete might have all the psychological skills in place and shatter expectations with a 4-hour performance.

Then there's the whole can of worms with triathlon times--my best "Oly" time included a swim in waters so rough than many athletes were throwing up in the water, and a bike course that was 42 km long! No doubt I'd be several minutes faster on an easier regulation course, but there haven't been any lately that work out logistically for me. Not a researcher, but thinking a better methodology might be to survey people before a race, then try to correlate psychological variables with their actual finish times (or their performance compared to a projected time) on the same course and same day.

Done.

I also wonder about some of the "noise" in age group athletes.  I know that tri and exercise generally takes a back seat to family stuff.  I fit my workouts around other commitments.  So while I have pushed myself to do well, and considered my mental efforts in races to be high, I know that my results are limited to a degree by my training limitations.  If I were elite, those limitations would be less.

I guess what I'm saying is that age groups have varying degrees of priorities that may skew results.

Agree. The questionnaire was a bit simplified. I made some suggestions in the comments box that she needs to ask some questions related to how we deal with adversity.

I really want to do an Olympic distance but I feel it is a little too far right now. Which training plan should I follow? The sprint sounds too easy for what I'm doing but the Olympic seems too much?

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.
