Next Monday February 24, I will have a scope done on my left knee to clean out loose/torn cartilage and to smooth out the rough areas (surgery #8 over the past 30 years). I have never had a surgery before while getting ready to train for A half and a full ironman. The half being June 8 and the full on August 24.
The surgery is February 24th with 4 weeks of recovery. One week after the surgery my plan (which is 26 weeks to the Full IM) is to concentrate solely on low impact training which is swim, walking versus running as well as low intensity spinning on the bike.

Does anyone have experience or input that can share on this? My surgeon seems to think that the timing to do the scope is good and should not have a major impact on my overall training plan. Any other experiences or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Its probably going to depend on what they find during the procedure. There is no reason to not be able to start biking on the trainer as soon as you can get a revolution on the pedals.  You can swim once the portals are healed.  As far as running goes it will depend on the procedure and how much arthritis you have, which I would as your surgeon about after the procedure.  Its a how you want to use your knee miles kind of thing.  I would make an educated guess that with a hx of this being your 8th surgery that you probably have some arthritis.  I think your time frame is OK.

After knee surgery Dec 5th I was non-weight bearing 8 weeks. It took another 2.5+ weeks of gradually adding weight before I was off the crutches. I started water jogging two weeks postop. If you have access to a diving well/deep water pool I would highly recommend it. I am able to swim laps again but have kept with the water jogging as well. I don't get the range of motion/leg workout that I want with just the laps. I am still limited as to how far/long I can walk and running is OUT. I figure if the track coaches here at our University have water jogging part of their training regimen that's good enough for me!

A few years ago I was in your situation as I needed an arthroscopy to clean up a meniscus tear. I had great bike fitness going in. Running was non existent. Swim fitness was good.

Surgery on a Thursday, mid May. Knee felt better immediately and never had crutches.

Rode bike the next week. Swam after sutures healed. Ran after 4 weeks.

Ran HIM at the end of July (2.5 month post op)

Ran IM in mid Nov (6 months post op)

You can do it. Just follow your ortho's protocol. Good luck!!

I have a torn meniscus and am torn between doing the arthroscopic surgery. I have heard many positive outcomes from folks who had it done. But I am 49 and I wonder if my outcome will be the same.

I am dealing with quadriceps tendonitis (QT) evidently brought on by my running, and am also recovering from meniscus surgery. I would think swimming would be good, but it seems to aggravate it some?

My symptoms have been present off and on for almost two years. Is this a surgical problem, or should I just keep managing it for as long as I can?

What we see is that people want to look good – in a bad way. Our society paints a picture of beauty. But nobody wants to really go back to basics of diet and exercise as the fountain of youth.
