Sunny
Total Time = 13h 12m 2s
Overall Rank = 335/701
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 43/83
Pre-race routine:

Woke up in at 4:30 in the morning. Slept surprisingly well. Ate 2 peanut butter honey and flaxseed sandwiches two eggs and a banana. Mixed some gatorade to drink on the bus headed to the start line and had a GU about 15 minutes before race start.
Event warmup:

Did not have any time to warm up or stretch. I really should have found a way to get in the water before.
Swim
  • 1h 10m 58s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had noticed that the start for this race is not as chaotic as other races and people take their time getting in the water. I stood in the very front and ran towards the water. after I made the first turn, my heart rate shot up and I could not breathe. My chest was tight and I felt like I was in trouble. I started to doggy paddle and take a lot of deep breaths to relax. a few minutes later, I felt like I could start to move consistently in the water. My next problem was that there were no buoys to sight and I had not really look early. so I just tried to swim parallel to the beach and when when I could see the buoy, I felt better and headed to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Find a way to warm up and get comfortable in the water prior to start.
Transition 1
  • 09m 51s
Comments:

T1 went well. I was more worried about being comfortable because of the cold. Changing all of my clothing was needed.
What would you do differently?:

If it was not that cold I would have not changed my clothes and saved some time
Bike
  • 6h 26m 6s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall the bike went as expected. I maintained a pace that was comfortable for me without pushing myself too hard. Goal the entire time was finish and control what I can control. The course was windy, but not unbearable. I drank water as I had done in training while it was hot so I ended up taking way too may pee breaks. The flip side was that I did not have any cramping issues the entire day.
What would you do differently?:

SInce it was cold, I should have drank a lot less. I need to make sure I am taking water based on conditions of the day.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 00m
  • 26.2 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Run walk was the order of the day and I completed the event in better time that I expected.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Although you can receive all of your vitamins and minerals through foods eaten in the diet, nutritional products used for training may not allow you to meet recommendations on a daily basis.

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
