Sunny
Total Time = 2h 51m 39s
Overall Rank = 59/64
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 11/11
Pre-race routine:

Ate a power bar. Visited with my brother. Raced.
Event warmup:

Jumped into lucky peak, splashed around. Got out and waited for the race to start.
Swim
  • 35m 19s
  • 800 meters
  • 04m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

First Tri. No wetsuit. I flat out didn't know how to swim. Freestyle for about 50m the rest was done with the "snow-angel" backstroke. I was in the water long enough to get cold, even with air temps in the 80-90 degree range.
What would you do differently?:

Learning to swim. Making great strides, or should I say strokes....
Transition 1
  • 05m 30s
Comments:

Exhausted from the swim. No real practice.
What would you do differently?:

Swim better, practice t1 in training.
Bike
  • 1h 25m
  • 12 miles
  • 8.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Fun course. A person with mtn. Bike skills would have a blast. It was way tougher than I expected,
What would you do differently?:

Back story here, I signed up for this three weeks before the event, and started training then. Previously I had not trained or exercised for any length of time for the last 18 years or so.

I would train more!
Transition 2
  • 03m 29s
Comments:

Changed shoes, ate a powerbar, grabbed my half frozen water bottle, and "ran"
Run
  • 42m 11s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

What can I say. I was fat, undertrained and tired. I'm happy I was able to pretend to run for parts of the course :)
What would you do differently?:

Already doing it. Dropped from 245lb to 185, training now for a HIM. I'm gonna crush this course in 2014
Post race
Event comments:

When I say it was too hard, I mean it was too hard for my fitness level. Already signed up for 2014, it will NOT be too hard this time.

I own both a road bike and a tri bike. I am wondering which bike I should be riding during off season training, or does it matter?

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
