Subaru Triathlon Series
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 31/149
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 6/18
Pre-race routine:

Got to the race site with plenty of time. Got the best spot on the rack. Of course there were only 149 people total and 18 in my age group. This was just a fun little try a tri but the turn out wasn't what it was normally.

Event warmup:

Swam about 200m warm up.
Swim
  • 07m 36s
  • 375 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Oh yeah baby! That's right #2 out of the water in my age group! Woohoo! Did I let that get to my head? I had visions of making the podium...turned out I was a little early to start thinking about a victory speech. :-) I planned on going out hard since this race was just for fun, but by the turn of the first bouy I noticed that there was me and one other guy way ahead of our wave so I stayed on his tail and gave it all I had. (again, ego making deicisions = bad idea) Great swim had a lot of fun.
What would you do differently?:

maybe slow down just a little.

Comments:

Nice roads. Liked that it was a short 10k. I just let it hang out. I wanted to stay in the number 2 spot in my age group. I pushed it way to hard. I'd rather do 42k anytime, it gives you time to pace it out. The 10k is so short you just have to give it your all. With about 1k left a few guys in my age group past me and reality started to set in. Dam.
What would you do differently?:

Save some for the third part of the triathlon. Who would have thought there was a run after the bike! :-)

Comments:

I stink. I'm a terrible runner. Need to remember that as fuel for the trianing fire in the fall.

I didn't save anything for the run. It took me 1k to get my legs and by the 2nd 1k I was too far behind to make up any serious time. I need more bricks to get my running legs quicker on the run. Overall this run was slower than the last race's 7.5k run and after a 25k bike with a huge hill. Go figure.

My son has taken to running the last 500m with me. The course layout prevented this. Since there wasn't anyone behind for a long distance I told Matty to run across the line with me. It was alot of fun. He had a hoot. He wants to get into the Kids of Steel Tri's. Hopefully this is starting to catch with him.
What would you do differently?:

Do more bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

It was hot so my son and I had a water fight.

Event comments:

Overall I found this Try a Tri more of a physical effort than my Olympic. It was hard to push it that hard for that short a period of time. I enjoyed it. It was fun to actually think what place I was in. Normally I'm just thinking get to the finish line.

Two different aspects to the sport I discovered today.

1. Short and fast - trying to place - I think these types of races are actually fun
2. Long and slow - I think I found these more challenging but more rewarding

I want to do a 1/2IM next year but I think I'll come back to this race and try and place again. all in all very fun!

149? Hmmm...I counted 150, unless I counted one extra racer (oops). Yell

And a pleasure to finally meet you in person. You weren't too far behind the 13yr olds. Heh.

Sounds like a fun event and not as big/crowded as the GL series if I am in the province next summer I think I will join you guys on this one. Overall a good showing but I know how you feel on the running thing.
