Subject: Custom Plans: Race vs. Maintenance
Sorry if I've missed a thread discussing this.

I'm trying to put in a short maintenance period for 6 weeks starting in March to bridge between my current training and starting a race plan in April.

What I've noticed is that, holding all other variables equal (pace, days per week, etc), the training volumes I'm getting for maintenance are quite a bit higher compared to the race plan that will pick up in April through August. Is this intentional? For example:

Week 1 Maintenance volumes are: 80min swim, 196 min run, 251 min bike
vs.
Week 1 Race 69 min swim, 117 min run, 150 min bike

The volumes for the maintenance plans are do-able, but I'm a bit afraid the volumes for the race plan won't be enough.

Thanks!
-Sean

A 'maintenance' plan will hold a certain percent of 'peak' volume for that distance.  For example, you are only racing Oly's this year.  After your first race, you will have had peak volume, a maintenance plan will decrease it 20-30% so that you can jump on a oly race plan to peak again without any large jumps in volume or base building phases.  Or you would use an oly maintenance plan to maintain oly volume before starting a HIM race plan.

What you have going on here is your maintenance plan is too much volume.  What I would try is do a 'sprint' maintenance plan (which will be about 80% peak sprint volume) then segway into your oly plan.

Let me know if that helps.  Also, upon redoing, I can look at your training volume graphs to make sure it works.
