Curious.  I'm tired of winter and with a new 3.75 inches of snow this morning here and -11 degree wind chill out it looks like the 19 miles I am suppose to get in today will be all on the dreaded dreadmill.  (Hope there isn't a lot of people at the Y, they have a 30 minute limit on the tread mills if peeps are waiting).

90 minutes, several times. I hate the dreadmill and it has a to be a really dire situation to get me on one--blizzard, typhoon, etc. Did more dreadmill miles last fall than I wanted to due to an injury--hairline elbow fracture and the doctor didn't want me to run outside for a month and risk tripping and reinjuring it. Yuck. Would not want to think about marathon training on the dreadmill....

When I was a teenager, I once ran 20 miles (or maybe time equivalent--can't remember) around two basketball courts in a gym, during a blizzard! We had no home dreadmill and no fitness centers in town; normally runners used the foyer of the university basketball stadium in that situation, but maybe it was locked or their parking lot was iced over. I was not the only one in there doing a long run!

Enjoy your run! Hopefully there is something decent to watch? The dreadmills at my current gym have built-in TV's, which makes it a bit more bearable, or you can prop an I-pad up and watch something on Youtube.

Because of back and heel issues I do 90% of my training on the "dreadmill" 90 mins is longest for me so far. Training for a 70.3, it will get longer! I too miss SPRING!!

Just over 2 hours (last winter - this year only got to about 1:50).  There are some days that are too dangerous around here, for me, to run outside in the street.  Got nicked by a car last year and started to think better about that one!

Got outside for 2:15 run yesterday and it started at -2F, but WAY better than a treadmill if it's safe!

All that said, I find the trainer a much harder thing on which to get into my zoned out/zen state…  I'm going to TRY to get over 2 hours on it today, but my mind just  won't abandon me on that thing!

20 miles / roughly 2 1/2 hrs. Actually wasn't too bad - watched a movie the whole time. I obviously prefer running outside but long trainer and treadmill sessions don't bother me.

3 hrs. Treadmill sessions don't bother me like most, but not sure that far really helped so much.

With wind chill, it's -40F so even the hardcores can't go outside this weekend. I hate the treadmill enough I'm paying 12 bucks to run on a track this morning for a 2+ hr long run.

Have many 90-105 min dreadmill runs under the belt though.

0!
My rec center has a 1/8th mile track. I'd rather run on that.

A little over 2 hours and 3.5 hours on the trainer. None of which is fun. My trainer record will be broken shortly and I hope the dreadmill one isn't anytime soon. Normal high here is 45 and we have a high of 3 today....I hate this winter.

Funny this comes up because we had massive 30 mph wind the other night and rain and cold, but I had to get 9 miles in. I went to our community center to use the treadmill, totally dreading it. I got there and found they have one of those Nordic Trac ones with IFit and the Google Earth set ups, so you can pick where you want to run, and the thing adjusts the belt, incline and speed to match the terrain as you watch the run on the screen. It was so cool, the time FLEW by and I had a great work out. If I had $3000, I'd buy one for my own home! But for $1.50. I can now use this one whenever I don't want to run outside. Totally changed my views of the dreadmill.

I've done many 3 hour, 20 mile runs on my treadmill when the weather too poor to go outside.

I bought my treadmill years ago specifically to do indoor winter training for January and February marathons, and April IM (when Arizona was in April). The way I see it is that when it comes to rain, cold, and wind, I'll do one of the three no problem, two of the three if one of them is mild, but I'll stay inside when it's all three (cold, windy, and wet) outside.

A flatscreen TV with Netflix, boxed DVD sets, and, noise cancelling headphones make the time go by easily, as does a touchscreen Kindle.  I vary the pace and/or incline once in a while to mix it up a bit. It's just as good as a workout as outdoors.

Longest treadmill run for me was 12 miles, around 1:45. I have run 14 miles on a 1/10 of a mile track at the rec center, 140 laps was boring but better than the treadmill.

I ran kind of slowly today on the treadmill since there's snow and ice outside. I only ran for 27 minutes. I don't think I've run more than 45 minutes on a treadmill. I just use it as a bridge to get through bad weather.

There should be relative times on the treadmill.

If I run at 6 mph the time just flies. If I try to run closer to 9 mph I can literally watch the electrons flowing in and out of the LCD since time passes so incredibly slowly. Every second seems like an hour.

I have done 20 miles on the treadmill. I use to hate the treadmill but now not so much. I look at it as a training tool just like a pair of running shoes. I use it mainly to get speed work in during the winter when it is just to slippery or the snow is too deep to get it done outside. I have mine in my heated garage and I just put my ipod on and run, I also vary the speed and incline to change things up.

Do not look at it as a dread mill but instead as a valuable training tool.

What a great idea - I'm going to have to try that!  Do you use the Bose airplane types, or an in ear one (Bose just came out with a new in-ear noise canceling set for pilots, but I haven't seen if they have a consumer version - or one that is rated for sweat!)?

And, back to the OP, it's not so much that I mind the treadmill as I love running outside...

I've done 2 hours and change (approx. 16 miles). That's because I signed up for an April marathon. Builds mental toughness...

Yes I have the Bose QuietComfort 15 over-ear headphones. There are two types people usually see on airplanes; the smaller QC3 on-ear types and the bigger over-ear QC15s. On-ear headphones move around too much for me when I run, so I use over-ear. The QC15s are very, very comfortable for me and I'm very happy with their noise cancelling performance. It takes out the drone of the bike drivetrain and the treadmill motor really well. I can read in peace, or watch TV without disturbing my family without  blasting the sound. The $300 price has been well worth it for the results produced.

I've not had any sweat issues with them. I do wipe off the ear pads every hour or so. I've used my QC15s for hundreds of hours of treadmill and trainer workouts, and before that I had an older model which I left on a plane (arggh!). The only issue I've had is pulling the cable out accidentally; it's designed to pop out rather than break, but since they are so comfortable I entirely forget I'm wearing them, get off the trainer, walk away and yank out the cable. I did it enough times the cable was getting torn so I bought a replacement for $10. Then I was chatting with a Bose guy at an airport about it and he gave me five spares for free. So I'm set for life.

There are several other types of noise-cancelling headphones out their now. Sondheim, Bose, Beats, wired, wireless, in-ear, on-ear, over-ear. Bose has consumer in-ear QC20 for phones with a microphone (QC20i for Apple products). Never tried it myself; I would worry about long-term comfort as well as sweat issues. But wireless would be nice; I have a 12' extension cable from Radio Shack connected to the TV or computer, and I know how to set things up so the cable drapes properly out of the way, but still.

Over 2 hours....I brought a cooler with my hydration in it...that I think got the most odd looks.

One summer when it was over 95. I would do 5.5 mile loop then run at the Y in the a/c for 30-45' then do another loop outside and finish up at the Y on the TM.  The A/C was so wonderful after the heat outside.

Roughly around 6 miles, if memory serves me correctly. I don't use the treadmill all that much. Fortunately, I live in a climate that doesn't require I rely on it. But, that six miles felt like 10...just saying. lol

Maybe 5+ hours? How long are the three Lord of the Rings movies? Easy pace, breaks whenever I wanted. Can only do about an hour if I'm just listening to something, but if I have a movie on it's easy to watch the whole thing while running.

I have a nice set-up with a large screen monitor, surround sound, fan, etc. The monitor swivels so it can be watched while on the treadmill or on the bike. I also designed a shelf unit that fits between the treadmill rails so I have somewhere to put the keyboard, mouse, etc. Been using the treadmill more as a desk lately, have velcro on the shelf and the laptop, with some neoprene under the laptop to absorb the vibration. Can't type on it even if only walking (don't have the coordination), but it's great for those virtual meetings when all I'm doing is listening in anyways.

Think I did a 12 back in Jan. You should have ran yesterday! This was my long weekend also, did 18.5 yesterday morning. A few weeks ago I had to get a 1 day pass to place with a 1/8 indoor track (my gym is 1/12, makes me dizzy).

I will leave you with a quote from Bill Bowerman Nike Founder and Olympic track coach "There's no such thing as bad weather, just soft people"

Hate the treadmill and this winter in IL has been brutal. I can deal with the cold to some extent, but the slippery roads wreck my long runs.

Today I had 11 miles scheduled. Went to the club and did both the track and treadmill. 3/3/3/2. Not bad plus I got a nice little break moving between the two.
