Pre-race routine:

I set my alarm for 5:30 AM, since the race started at 7:00 AM. I knew I need to get on the road and get moving.

Woke up with the alarm, I hadn't slept super well, went to bed before 10:30 but could not really fall right to sleep. I think it was being in a strange place, and a little too warm.

I got dressed in my race gear, packed the van and grabbed a sweet roll as I was headed out the door. I ended up only eating about 1/4 of the roll, it was waaaayyy too sweet. Headed to a McDonald's and got a egg mcmuffin and hash brown, with coffee. (I did not drink the coffee until after to race because it was so hot.)

Drove up to the race, and got out and got checked in. Course here is where it gets a little goofy. I picked up my race number and package, I read the number and I THOUGHT it said 109, (it really said 106) so I got the timing chip for 109.... DUUUHHH, I figured that out AFTER the race and I think I got it cleared up.

By the time I got there the rack was nearly full, I was just able to squeeze my bike in, and spread out my towel. Pinned my race number to the "race belt" I made, and put it on the towel with my various shoes.

Hit the bathroom prior to the race, so I would have one less thing to think about. Then down to the lake.
Event warmup:

Got in the lake and did a nice warm up in the water. I swam some where about 200 yards, and felt smooth and good. Hung around and listened to some people talking, then headed to the start area when they called us over.

Since the air was colder than the water, it felt good to be in the water, and chilly to be out until the race started. Since they did NOT start on time, we were out a little longer than we needed to be.

Comments:

I was trying to draft some, but didn't do very well. I was getting some contact early on, then thought I got away from it. Only to get kicked in the chest by someone doing the breast stroke. I was only glad I did not get kicked in the face.

I ended up swimming up to several people that I didn't realize were there, and hitting their feet. I didn't think I was THAT fast.

I kept needing to switch to breast stroke both to sight and to breath. I need to get better at swimming, being in the water has helped. I didn't feel like I was going to die the whole time, and wondering when it was going to be done.
What would you do differently?:

Keep swimming more, and figure out how to get around people better.

Comments:

Well this was not the "true time." I got out of the water, and did not follow the cones, didn't see that they "made a line" so I didn't see the timing strip, so I had to get re-directed to the right area. I had already hit the lap button on the watch, so the "offical swim time" and T1 time have over lap to my watch.

Had some trouble getting my socks on, but since I wore my new Tri top I did not need to get another shirt on.
What would you do differently?:

DUH, (sing to the tune of "follow the yellow brick road") Follow the orange cone lane....

Comments:

I was really pleased with this ride. The first half of the ride I was averaging 20 MPH. I got a little tired on the second lap and ended up backing off the speed.

It was a little odd, they had us going out "with the traffic" but then had us coming back on the same side of the road, just on the left of the bikes. So you went out on the left, with bikes coming back on the right side, and came back with bikes on the right side...It just felt odd.

I was only passed by about 4-6 people on this leg of the race. Most of those were the young bucks in the first wave.

I kept my cadence up in the 90-100 range, so I stayed out of the bike gear. Didn't have to change gears a whole lot, since the course was flat. I got worried about drinking, but then I started making a real point to drink. I had meant to eat a gel, but then didn't.

I saw one point were 2 gals that were in the race were biking side by side (I was going to say something about that being illegal and didn't.) I yelled about being on their left, and the one barely sped up and got out of the way. They were just chatting away, like it was a tour.

I had one other point that was really pretty scary. I was coming up on someone, and I could not see around them. I just saw him I yelled out "on your left" and thought he didn't hear me, so I yelled louder. All of a sudden the guy starts braking, he had been getting ready to pass someone, and I could not see the person he was passing. I had just enough room to get around the guy. I yelled "sorry I didn't know you were passing" and just kept right on booking.

Mentally I was getting pretty tired by the end. I knew I had pushed pretty hard, and I was a little worried what it was going to do to my run.
What would you do differently?:

Not a whole lot.

Comments:

I had to stop to get off the bike, I just could not get my one foot out of the clip.

My legs were getting a little shaky, so I ran but carefully. Got my running belt on, and helmet off, running shoes on. Grabbed my water bottle took a big gulp and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to get my shoes off without taking them off the pedals.
Run
  • 33m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

This is my area of weakness, I am working on it, but I am still really slow. I actually passed 3 people on the run, of the 3 one passed me again, and I passed her again. Then she passed me with .3 of a mile to go and I just could not keep up with her.

The paved part of the run was flat and pretty smooth. I was getting warmer, but it was still pretty cool. The trail run part was not super hilly, but had some real rough spots. I could not carry a whole lot of speed in that area (not that I have THAT much I carry any where.)

I knew I was not going to break 30 minutes, I was not really even hoping to do that today. I just wanted to run the whole thing. Every tri I have done this year I have walked some part of it. I broke that today, I ran every foot of it. (well except for the water break, and that I don't plan on running through.)

I was tired, but I also just paced myself. I was trying to keep the speed down, so I would not wipe out. I just kept plugging away until it was done. I was disappointed they did not have water every mile.

They had the 1 mile marked, but the next marker came at 2.5 or a really odd ball distance. I was a little confused by that, I figured I was running too slow and so I was very happy to get a 2nd marker.

When I was finishing and they yelled out my number, I went.... wait I am 109 not 106.... eerrrrr looked at my race number.... yeppers I was 106.
What would you do differently?:

Again not a whole lot.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, walked around talked with Don from my Tri group. Cheered the few finishers that were after me on.

Grabbed a banana, glass of gatoraid and walked around.

Checked the finishers list, and noticed that I didn't have a time posted, then noticed I didn't start the race.... dang I felt tired for not starting the race. So I talked to the race director and he directed me to the race computer geek, who checked and I think fixed the problem.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being 15 pounds over the weight I should be, not running enough in the last 20 years.

Event comments:

Maybe they were better before I finished, but the racers did not seem to be hanging around cheering for anyone. They were mainly getting something to eat and drink.

I know once I finished that was really my main concern. I was getting pretty hungery, and needed some thing to drink.

A great race for me, I was hoping for my wife to support me at this race... but it didn't happen.  She didn't want to get up that early, and drag 4 grumpy sleepy kids along with her.

Great job on the race.  The run footing got pretty tricky at times!  Nice job running the entire portion.  See you at Buck Creek!

Way to run the whole thing. Sounds like you had a solid bike too!! I know it is effort to get the whole family there - if only these races didn't start so early
