Subject: staying up kind of late the night before a race?
Hi all, I have a 5 mile foot race coming next Saturday for St pattys in STL! I'm excited as ever for it, but I just have one question.

My girlfriend of 3 years has a cousin who is a pro mma fighter and he has a fight that night, and of course she wants me to go (as long as I can get off work). The whole event starts at 6, not sure when he fights, but I figure I could be there till 11 or 12 at night. The race is at 9am the next morning, but obviously I have to wake up earlier than that to get there and get everything figured out.

I guess my question is do you think being out kind of late the night before will effect my run? I know that 2 nights before is actually the most important sleep, but it still makes me wonder! Any feedback is appreciated

-Caleb

Personal question, really. How do you normally function on less sleep? It's fine for me, and I'm typically a light sleeper the night before a race. Someone else might need all eight hours.

Unless this is your A-race and you are going for podium and money, don't worry about it. I personally try not to let my hobby get in the way of life if at all possible.

I was always taught, and the coaches have taught my son, that the night you need to worry about getting thebest rest is 2 nights before your race, not the night before.  Lots of people stay up late the night before a race because they can't sleep due to nerves.......sleep good Thursday and keep your GF happy.

It'll only affect you mentally -- if you let it.

You could always leave early after the cousin's fight and not stay till the end.

You can always take a nap before the fight.

I mean, I barely got two hours of sleep because I was so nervous before my first marathon and I did fine.... If you can normally function on 6 hours of sleep and this isn't your A race, I'd think adrenaline would help you out just fine. I've also been to a wedding the night before a race and actually slept through my alarm for a few minutes -- who does that on race day?!?!? -- and ended up with my best time of the year. I think you'd be fine for a 5-miler.

BINGO!

I always say that if you are well tapered and rested, you won't sleep well the night before the race.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I rarely get more than 4 hours sleep the night before an Olympic Tri or even a 70.3. If the race is on a Sunday, I get a good nights sleep Friday night, sleep in Saturday morning. After that I'm good to go.

I don't stay up late the night before a race. I always sleep well the night before a race, and the night before the night before, and the night before that. I like sleep and I do it often

Yep. I try on the several nights before that as I need a good rhythm. The last night isn't going to fix it if I'm already in trouble and it doesn't really matter if I've done well before that. Quite often I don't sleep as well regardless of intentions.

The only race you should get a good night sleep before is Ragnar (or any overnight relay) because I can guarantee you won't get much/any sleep the night after and it's hard to run and drive a rental van on 30 minute naps.  Otherwise, have fun and no worries!

These are spot-on.  It's not the sleep the night before the race that matters, it's being well rested the several nights before.

However, don't overdo the rest and relax before the race. I really hate when the night before race day I fall asleep a little after midnight, wake up at 1:30, manage to get back to sleep by 3am, only to sleep fitfully until 4am when it's time to get up. That's happened to me more than once, and sleeping that poorly the night before an IM just adds to the morning tension.

Well put! Enjoying the quality time with the GF and supporting her cousin is worth the bit of sleep you'll lose. You'll be fine! Good luck!

My hunger stays under control well enough throughout the day eating every couple hours but come 9:00 pm I am again craving something sweet and if I don't eat I don't sleep.
