I did my 2nd sprint tri this weekend. My first was such a great experience and longer than this one. This one just stunk. Came in dead last. Not one, but two flats on brand new tires and tubes. I even had to have a motorcycle escort on the bike part after they opened the road to traffic. They were nice enough to let me finish, but by the time I started the run, everyone was cheering people at the finish line and I had to "excuse" my way past them. I'm feeling very frustrated and defeated. I know, I know, at least I finished, but it's just not helping.
Thanks,
Discouraged Rhonda

It sounds really frustrating Rhonda -- so sorry for you bad experience. But get over it and get ready for your next one -- and kick butt then.

You probably don't realize the people that were standing on the sidelines that were influenced by your never quit attitude.  Don't let your time determine your feelings about the race.  One day someone may walk up to you and thank you for hanging in there because it may a difference to them.  Congrats on a great race!

Rhonda - Sometimes it stinks - two flats stinks - just one question...

"Did you bail from the race?"  I mean I saw a guy yesterday walking his bike to T2 to hang it up after a rear tire flat. He bailed - rather quit than come in last. But did you bail?

No?  Why not?   That's easy...

YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE!! Your second tri was one in many to come - grist for your mill - encouragement for folks who worry about coming in last...   My attitude is that there is no such thing as last for triathletes - just, "We're up to the challenge!'  Nike says "Just do it"  - Well We "Do it!"  Maybe not like the elites - but we do it. 99 out of 100 Americans don't do it.

You did it!

I feel for you - my second tri I was dead last out of the pool, then my chain broke, and I had to run a longgggggg ways to get to T2. They were picking up the cones to mark the course by the time I started my run - but no way I was going to DNF if I didn't have a broken bone or two. No real good suggestions other that try to figure out what happened to your tires, and try to do something different next time!!!!

Congratulation on finishing!!!!!

Rhonda,
I give you alot of credit!!! Two flats?!?!? I don't even keep a spare on my bike. I figure a flat and I'm done. But two incredible! Frustrated maybe, discouraged NO WAY, your determination and perseverence are admirable. Imagine how well you'll do next time when you don't have mechanical problems. The "normal" mental batlles will be a piece of cake. Sign up for another ASAP. all of your hard work will (and already has) paid off. Mark

Everyone is right - you're a hero for finishing. Just be sure you figure out what was causing those flats so it doesn't have to happen again.

This is probably the best respone I have read to a "my raced sucked" story. I have even plagerized the last few lines and have them posted inside my training record book and over my desk at work......Thanks

It is ashame that it happened on your 2nd Tri. Look at the brightside, it could have happened on your 1st, and then you would have been really discouraged.

A couple of thoughts:

1) Sometimes Sh!t happens. Don't let it get you down. Make a motivation tool.
2) "Better DFL than DNF (or worse DNS)"

Just remember you finished. That is what is important.

I have nothing to add that hasn't been said here quite eloquently....

Rhonda...you finished...that says something about you, your spirit, your determination.

Chalk this one up to bad bike joo joo and get back out there....just think, believe it or not, in time you're gonna laugh at the "time i got not one but TWO flats during a triathlon"

I always try to look at the comical in the situation so that when I relay the story my listeners and I can get a good laugh out of it.

Good job!

Hey Rhonda,
You are better than me. I would have just sat down and damn cried. Feel sorry for yourself for 3 minutes then get ready to go. Remember even greats like Hank Aaron struck out many times before breaking Babe Ruth's homerun record. I'm sure Sally Edwards had her share of problems as well. You're blessed and maybe GOD was just letting you know what happens sometimes and to move on from there.

Rhonda,

In your seeming failure of coming in dead last, you've become quite an inspiration. Things always happen for a reason, although we don't always see why at the time. From all the posts, sounds like you're actually quite the hero.
