Pre-race routine:

It was a 2 p.m. start in downtown Nashville so I tried to rest a little before driving the 30 minutes to downtown. Saturday was beautiful. Race day was another story...mid 40's and a light rain and breeze. I ate a banana and some GUs on the way to the race.
Event warmup:

I found a parking spot about a 1/4 mile away from the race site so I used that distance to shake out my legs.

Comments:

The weather was not great. Light rain, mid 40's plus a breeze. I wore a light running jacket over a technical t-shirt, shorts and calf sleeves...that worked out fine.

The start was slightly downhill which made it easy to get warmed up to race pace without maxing the heart rate from the get-go. About a 1/2 into the race we turned toward downtown and I saw the long slog that would take me up 115 feet over the next 1/2 mile. My heart rate was maxing near the top but I was able to recover and pick up time on the downhill. I didn't get my watch going until 1/2 mile into the race so I didn't have the most accurate data but I could see I was running close to my goal pace (8:30/8:40 miles). On the 2nd loop I wanted to cry uncle near the top of that long hill but I didn't stop and raced hard to the finish once I got over the top.
What would you do differently?:

nothing. It was a great race for me.
Post race
Warm down:

get out of the rain, jog back to the car. The people that hung around after the race had gone into the local bars to drink green beer...I waited until I got home for my post-race celebratory drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I been battling tibial tendonitis so my run mileage has dropped a bit. I need to do more hill training too.

Event comments:

It was my best 10k by far. I think my best previous time was 7 minutes slower! The running I had done leading up to my half marathon last November and the marathon build I'm currently on has helped me tremendously.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.

This aggressive couch to 5k program will get you running from nothing and will be the lead-up to any of the sprint programs.
