I have swam in 65F water with an ambient temperature of 40F sans wetsuit. 70 is not all that bad.

I grew up in Southern California...70 degrees without a wetsuit will be fine. Enjoy the swim.

Pros are not even allowed to wear them at that temp in shorter races, it too hot!

4.4 Wet suits. Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The wetsuit policy for elite athletes shall be determined by the USAT Athletes Advisory Council. The AAC has set the wetsuit maximum temperature for elite athletes at 68 degrees for swim distances less than 3000 meters and 71.6 degrees for distances of 3000 meters or greater.
Any swimmer wearing a wetsuit with a thickness measured in any part greater than 5 millimeters shall be disqualified.

Good to know that I will survive. I'm signed up for Augusta and they say temps in the 'low 70s' but from the videos of previous races it looked like everyone was in a wetsuit. I guess I will look like the center of an Oreo cookie amonst all the wetsuits.

70º isn't cold. Especially if you're racing. I'm a weenie when it comes to cold water. Most people will be wearing wetsuits because it's an advantage. The buoyancy from a wetsuit makes it feel like you're just paddling.

I did a race last weekend in Orlando and the water was warmer than the air (66º water/48º air). 90% of the racers wore wetsuits. This was my first time wearing a wetsuit and I loved it. I totally understand why so many hope for wetsuit legal conditions. And, as long as you Body Glide properly, the suit slides off in seconds in T1. I also liked that my legs were warm before the bike ride.

I have just bought a new wetsuit for my first owe tri in April. I have been told the water temps will be around 70-72 and will be wetsuit legal. I will swim in the wetsuit as it's my first ows.

If you don't want to invest, you can always rent one.
