Anybody buy or take a look at Matt Fitzgerald's 22 week Minimalist IM plan for 80 bucks over at training peaks? Is it worth it? I've done a HIM and am currently training for a HIM in June. I want to step up to a IM but I really don't have the time for a lot of 5-6 hour rides. Being able to have a life and pursue other hobbies while training would be a plus too.

I haven't read the book but I'll give you my $.02.

In general, newbie Ironman triathletes tend to overtrain and/or not focus their training where it needs to be.  There is no need for someone to be slogging through 20 hour training weeks for 5-6 months... unless you really want to and enjoy it and you have the time.

Sami Inkinen is one of the best AG triathletes in the world and the dude trains about 8 hours per week.  He has some good thoughts here: http://www.samiinkinen.com/post/11347268687/hawaii-ironman-secrets

Sure, he has some genetic gifts that most of us do not possess but his approach to training is still very valid.

So true.

Great philosophy, but he's doing close to a full 140.6 every week with his speed. That would translate to most AGers doing 10-15 hours EVERY week with peak weeks of up to 20 hours (compared to his 12 hour peak). Hours are good, but some time you need to get in the miles/meters as well.

However, that is rather sick that he was able to complete a sub-9 Kona with that training plan.

I looked up the link and his training plan costs around 500 bucks

If you could shave, say 25 hours from your current plan, that would be $20/hour recovered for family or other time. Really not a bad investment if you could produce the same results.

I wonder what the difference is between Matt's plan (80 bucks at training peaks) and Sami's plan? They seem to preach the same approach.

The difference is that Fitzgerald's plan is a template written up entirely ahead of time whereas Matt Dixon will be actively working with the athlete throughout the process. What Sami wrote in his blog is just a sample to give an idea of a "typical" week, not to say that he does exactly that week in, week out, but to give a rough idea of what he might do.

One needs to be mindful of the event being undertaken, but this rationale seems to be overly fixated on it.
