Subject: What's the furthest you'll run for marathon training?
So I'm training for a marathon and also an IM but they are 4 months apart so I'm not worried about it being too close. I'm trying to train on time instead of distance again this year and have 3 hours be my max. The "problem" is that since I've been adding tempo work, I've gotten a lot faster than last year. I did just over 17 miles in 2 hours flat this weekend. If I go 3 hours, I'm thinking I'll strain my body too much but then again I also have a lot better running form than I did a year ago thanks to a lot of winter cadence work. What's the max you guys will do before a marathon? I want to say last year I stopped at 21.# miles

I was going to say most will do around 20 miles, me I kinda have a mental thing going on where I like to run the full distance at least once before the race usually about 5 weeks out the only time I don't do this is if it's an Ultra.

22 miles for a stand-alone marathon. 18 miles for an Ironman marathon.

I think I did 24 last year which got me a PR. Then again, I had mileage as well as marathon-running experience to back it up. So I do think it will depend on each runner's experience & mileage build-up.

I have done IMs & a marathon a month later. Total burn-out. So hopefully four months will suffice. I think the mental recovery is far more important.

Depends completely on the mileage I've been running, the intensity and the purpose of the workouts.

I ran 24 miles during one training cycle a few years ago, the most that I will run again when training for a stand alone marathon is 22 miles.

Last marathon I did 4-5 20 mile runs. IM peaked at 18 miles. If you're worried that 3 hours will strain your body too much, you may be running too hard

Yeah, just run slower. Are you running using a heart rate monitor or anything?

This, although I like one of those runs to hit 22.

What's your goal for the marathon?  Sub-3?

Like others have said, it really depends on what you have done previously, and what your goals are for the race. I think the acceptable range is between 16 miles on the low end, and the full distance on the high end. I have a marathon in the fall (about 6 weeks after an HIM), but it's a "fun" race for me that I'm doing with my wife. I doubt I will go more than 20 as a long run leading up.

I like to run multiple 20s and one 22. The 22 is totally for the mental aspect, because "just 6 more" seems so much longer than "just 4 more."

Then again, I've heard of programs that only go up to 16-18... but nearly every training program I've seen says to run long at GMP +:30-1:00. If you slowed it down a bit, would that be more in line with 20 miles/3 hours?

22 miles is a good target longest run, not to be done just once, but at least a few times so it feels not like a huge strain.

I've even gone 24, and helped, rather than hurt, despite what a lot of the programs out there say (they typically say to avoid 22+ miles due to injury risk.)

4 miles extra at the tail end of a marathon is a big deal - the hope is that the taper will get you through that 4 miles, but it really can be dicey when you're pushing your pace to the max.

I will add that I did a training block where I maxed at 18mile long runs, and despite running 60+mpw, I felt unprepared to race the full 26.2 compared to how I felt with 22 mile long runs, even if the 22 milers were a bit slower. (18 miles feels short when you're used to running 22s!)

I'm aiming for ~3:10 to 3:15. 3:24 is my PR, which I hit twice last year. This will be the 3rd year I've been doing marathons. My long runs are all in Z2 but now I'm adding 30 minutes of tempo(Z3) at the end since I always fade during the marathon. I started at 15 minutes of tempo and worked my way up. Doing this over the past month has really helped me out a lot with speed and endurance. I'm thinking the shorter of 22m or 3 hours will be my max for my run now. This year is a little odd. I'm sort of just winging everything for my IM/marathon training and not following a plan. At least so far, things are going better than last year.

You should be more than fine with a 3 hour run with your goal and PR times you have done. When I last ran a marathon (23 years ago in which I BQ'd) I did run the full distance once in training and a few runs of over 20 miles. That really did make a world of difference for me in making my BQ. That said, I am training for June 1 marathon and am now 60 (female) and MUCH slower. I honestly don't think I can stay out there on a training run for as long as I would need to in order to go the full distance. The program I am following has 3x 20 mile runs, which unfortunately in training will take me 3:30 to complete. Soooo, not sure yet whether I will try to push it a bit farther in my last long run before the marathon. Depends on how I feel.

But sounds like you have a sound plan and experience, so you should be good to go.

I've done four marathons-- the farthest single run I've done is 22 miles, but I've since come to understand that total weekly mileage and the cumulative effect of several long runs is just as important as one single long run in a week. I'm not sure how that fits in with the extra volume of triathlon training, though.

If 3 hours at an easy pace didn't strain you last year, 3 hours at an easy pace will be even less strenuous last year.

Doesn't answer the title of the thread, but does address the idea of changes in fitness vs. training time. Faster people can train more miles with less strain.

some time back (10 years or so) I would do a few 30 mile training runs mixed in with some 22, 20 and shorter in the build up to each marathon.

Now I'll actually max out at 3 hours, how ever far that takes me as I like to do those on trails rather than roads.

for longer races I'll still hit a couple of long training runs, or I'll do a couple of hours running followed by a couple of hours on the bike trainer.

Reason I asked is because someone who ran a comfortable 17+mi in 2 hours flat should be easily sub-3.  Even if only the last 30min moved to marathon pace.  I know that doesn't answer your question, but it just didn't seem to make sense to me.  Good luck with your marathon!

I ran my first marathon in January. Training for that, I did 20, 22, & 25 mile runs at a training pace (not race pace).

I ran my second marathon this past Sunday. I got lazy & didn't do as many long runs for this one. My longest was 16 miles. I still set a PR even though the course on Sunday was a lot harder than my January race.
