I found a nice road by my house kinda quite. no stops directly 1 mile in length. Best part 22 turns if you want to do 24 mile ride. Little more than the every 2 miles from ITU Chicago.

In case anyone is interested, Well Fit is offering a free bike handling clinic in preparation of the ITU.

Smart.

those new to bike handling will need it.

Looks like the crit racing I've done in the past will pay off in a new and different way.

If my back stop hurting I am so going to do this. I am about the worse bike handler out there. I have gotten off the bike and flip the bike 180.

Would this be a horrible race to do as a first ever triathlon? I am signed up for the Chicago Triathlon in August, but I'm considering this one a well. Will it be way too hectic for my first one?

I would recommend you do a small sprint first, just so that you aren't in complete shellshock on race day. There was some discussion on another thread on this issue. ITU is likely going to be crowded, with lots of turns, and busy. The Chicago Triathlon is also so huge that it almost fails under its own weight. Both races are very different from the small and medium events I have done, and my preference is for the smaller events.

Thanks for the feedback. My bike handling skills are ok, not great. And I'm not particularly fast. I would love to do a smaller one first, but I can't drive (never got my license!) so it's harder to get to the ones out in the suburbs. Sounds like this one might be a bit overwhelming for a newbie though.

I agree with what was said above.  The bike course, while short, is also relatively technical from the standpoint of having 3 180's per lap.  That means 3 times, each lap, you will have to slow WAY down, do a 180 and get back up to speed again.  And it isn't just doing it on your own, there will be MANY others trying to do the same thing.  Nothing like even the normal Chicago Tri, which frankly isn't that bad on the bike other than the road, and the waiting and the.... never mind.

Anyway, I really wouldn't recommend it for your first.  Even if you are just doing the Sprint.  See if there are any other races that are close to Metra stations that you can get to and do them.  Build up your experience.

I am probably the worse person on a bike when it comes to handling. Seriously. Chicago Triathlon is not bad at all. For the Oly you have really only 3 turns and only 1 is really scary.

ITU I think is going to be a nightmare at least for me. Basically it is180 degree turn ever 2 miles. Hopefully they are pretty wide turns

Better or worse I switched to the Sprint. Back is still bothering me so not sure if I will do anything to be honest but I know the Oly is out for me.

The Naperville tri starts at Centennial Beach, maybe two miles off the Metra, if you want to give that one a go in August. And think about joining the Chicago Tri Club. For some of the more popular local races, you may be able to get a ride out to the race. I know there were some ride shares out to Galena last month.

Is there a point to going to the expo on Friday? I guess if you want to look around some and stay off your feet more on Saturday but then again you have to be down there on Saturday to rack your bike.

Do they ever do any meet and greet with any of the pros on Friday?

They are talking about alternatives in case the swim is too cold. I really hope not. Swimming the thing I do best.

Heh.  Well, I did just do an Oly at Pleasant Prairie this last weekend and a Sprint the weekend before.  I'm tired.

Thanks.

Looks like the weather will hold out, thankfully, AND the water is a decent temp (~68).  Hoping to go under 2:35 if all goes well.  Would have done that at PP last weekend but they had to shorted the bike due to delays and they lengthened the swim unintentionally due to the fog.  2:29 but I think I would have done 2:35-2:36 had the course been right.

So... Against my own better judgment and the advice of people on here, I ended up signing up for the sprint. Lots of reasons why - moving soon, starting school in August, not able to drive to the burbs... I know I will be slow, terrified, and quite possibly be in over my head... BUT I also can't wait to do my first ever triathlon!!

Any last minute words of advice/encouragement are welcome!

yeah you will not be the only one. I just hope I do not run into you on any turn around. I am already worried I will crash into people last thing is I need someone like me.

I am just glad I get like 3:45 to finish.
