Subject: Wheel hub question

I'm getting ready to pick up a new bike for Jr.....11 speed Dura Ace components.  While I was thinking about the change last night it occured to me that his PT wheel hub (G3) is 10 speed.  Will I be able to change the hub on the PT to 11 speed?  I assume that 11 speed cassettes are not compatible with current 10 speed shimano hubs?  Is that right?  What am I looking at?

Thanks

So I'm looking around and found that the G3 is "11-speed compatible".......would it just be a matter of changing the free-hub?

I don't think you even need to do that.  Double check with Wheelbuilder.com or someone who knows better though.

Side note: I've mentioned this before, but the newer powertap freehubs are alloy, which is crap.  If you ride enough, pretty soon the steel/titanium cassette will chew into the alloy freehub body and become very difficult to remove.  You can order a steel freehub... it is worth the bit of extra weight

That would be good.....and thanks for the tip on the free hub.  I know I read (when they were coming out) that 11 speed cassettes would not work with current shimano 10 speed free hubs,  but I can't find it.

From your recent posts it seems Jr's been making some serious progress and accomplishing a lot of goals lately. A new bike seems like a great motivator/worthy investment right now. Cheers,

If your current G3 doesn't already have this free hub body, then this is what you need.  The awesome thing about powertap hubs is that the freehub body easily pops on and off without any tools.

Although it seems like wheelbuilder only sells the alloy version.  I would agree with Mark that the steel version is much better unless you're a weight weenie.  The alloy freehub body gets chewed up pretty bad.

I looked at the wheelbuilder and powertap sites and I'm not seeing a steel option for the G3 11 speed hubs.  Bummer.

They show up on ebay but I'm pretty sure the "steel" means the bearings, not the hub body itself.  Wheelbuilder *does* have a steel version of the 10 speed one.  I'd suggest calling powertap support directly to get a definitive answer.

My back wheel needs to be trued up. It has a slight side-to-side wobble, and I feel at times like I'm going to lose control when I ride. Is this something that I should only trust to my LBS to do?

The wheels are my first area of concern and I have started to shop around. I find it nauseating to think of spending the same amount for wheels as my bike. Any help?
