Completed my first ultra last weekend - a 51km trail race across some mountains here in Ireland. Finished in 6hrs 50 - it was one of toughest (if not the toughtest!) things I've ever done. As per the norm here in Ireland we had all seasons in one race - sun, gales, hail, snow & rain! Had bad calf cramps for the last 20km so really suffered adn added at least 30mins to what I had thought I'd do based on training.
Had thought about a 50mile race in June but really not sure now based on how tough this one felt!

Congratulations!!

Don't write off the 50 just yet. You'll forget the suffering soon enough.

Congratulations, Graham!   Besides the calf pain and crazy weather, didn't you LOVE being out there?!?   Give yourself some time to recoup and regroup before you pull the plug on the 50.   Each race brings different challenges and fun.

Cheers guys! Yeah it was great being out there and probably something I never thought I'd do so loving the fact that i've completed it! I've just about got over the suffering but still unsure about the 50miler - we'll see how a few runs go next week!

Good job!

Now you have a 'feel' for what the ultra events are all about.

As it has been said, wait a while and soon you'll be thinking about that next big race.

No one said it was going to be easy. ;-)

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

My 1st triathlon, Xterra and the mess I made of myself. This wasn’t your regular triathlon, it was off-road.
