Heading out to the Grand Canyon on 5/13 to knock R2R2R off the to do list. We're planning on a 4 AM start. Seeking feedback from anyone who's been out there. What worked? what didn't ? We're aren't aiming for a particular finish time. We do want to take time to enjoy all the sights. So let me know about your exp.

Assuming you have your nutrion, hydration, and gear dialed in, here's the main things that come to me...

1) Be prepared for temperature extremes. Whatever the temps are in Phoenix is what it will be at the bottom of the GC. The section between Phantom Ranch and Cottonwood can be very hot due to how close the rock walls are. (The good thing is, that it is flat through there.)

2) Get accurate information about where water is available. It can vary at times of the season due to pipeline breaks and other factors.

Good luck.

4AM start is a great idea. Like jkon said check to see where the water is but by that point all of the taps should be on. They were when I did it on 5/5/13 even though the North Rim entrance was not open yet. I plan on doing it again next year and when I do I plan on brining hiking poles to help with the steps as you up the steep sections. Be smart and safe. Good luck.

Ah, please give an update (or maybe a RR) upon your return! This is definitely something I want to do in the future.

just a read that report. a carbon copy of my r2r2r. the steepness of the climb up to the north rim did me in as well.
