Life Time Triathlon Series
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 18m 41s
Overall Rank = 295/404
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 45/51
Pre-race routine:

I was informed by my friends the day before that I was racing with them, hadn't swam in 6 months or ridden in a month...
Swim
  • 44m 37s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

The lack of swimming showed, big time. This was by far my worst swim ever. I felt OK for the first few minutes then it all went to hell. I was having trouble catching my breathe while swimming and had to hang onto a kayak inside the first 300 meters. This has never happened to me. After that is was all breaststroke until the last 200 meters I was able to bull together an ok stroke.
What would you do differently?:

Be in decent swim shape.
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

After that swim I wanted to just have an enjoyable race going forward, got the feet well dried off, sunscreen on and headed out.
Bike
  • 1h 31m 20s
  • 45 kms
  • 29.56 km/hr
Comments:

Set an easily sustainable pace, kept the heart rate down and cranked it out. Didn't want to push it too hard, as I wanted to have a decent run and knew that I could easily thrash the legs on the bike. Pretty enjoyable ride overall.
What would you do differently?:

More training is the theme of this race!
Transition 2
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

Shoes on, hat on, drink of water, took my time to get everything adjusted.
Run
  • 56m 42s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt like big sacks of concrete at first, but inside the first mile I started to feel a lot better. The only real training I've been doing lately is running, and I'm so glad I put in some decent miles the past 2 months. I ran at a decent pace the whole time, hit up every other aid station for water and an orange slice, and cruised along. There was some pain and suffering, but there always is in tri running!
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

The reason I was out there was to race with my friends. While the swim sucked for me, the rest of the race was pretty enjoyable, and I love being around the race atmosphere. Second worst Oly time ever for me. On a positive note, I got to see a number of BT peeps that I haven't seen in awhile! Overall it was a fun day doing something I love!

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
