Total Time = 5h 18m 38s
Overall Rank = 233/1259

Age Group Rank = 28/170
Pre-race routine:

Hung out with Row and sis-in-law Virginia
Event warmup:

None,
Swim
  • 36m 34s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a good swim. Sighted well, swam well. No real drafting because of the time trial start and not finding anyone (and sucking at drafting)

But it was the first good swim I've had in a long time. It was definitely a boost for IMTX and the rest of the year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 04m 49s
Comments:

Tried something new today. Put on my "running" socks for the bike instead of going sockless. I've had some rubbing on my Achilles scar so I started wearing socks. Thought I'd save some T2 time by using the toe socks. Hard to put on while wet but not bad. I took my time in T1. Wasn't rushing.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe go faster? Maybe nothing?
Bike
  • 2h 44m 3s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Before the race the MC said that it appeared the wind would not be a factor during the race. That dude straight up lied. There was some hellacious wind out there. Two nice sections when it was a tailwind but mostly it was a headwind or evil head/crosswind. Such a sucky wind day.

With that said, I had a good day. I knew I could push more than an IM so I did, but not too much, just sort of rode and had fun. Ended up at 187 watts for the ride which isn't too much over my IM wattage. Yet another boost for the Year of the IM
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push harder? Maybe not. I had a fun day.
Transition 2
  • 03m 42s
Comments:

just cruised in and made the change. Had to pee so that took some extra time. but having the socks on was nice. sprayed suntan lotion on and took off.
What would you do differently?:

pee faster?
Run
  • 1h 49m 32s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

What a nice run. (I've never said that before in a distance event) It was hot, it was windy, but it didn't matter to me. Not today. I didn't push too hard I just ran and had a good day. Still got to the point of "I don't want anything to eat and drink" moment but powered through and had a good day.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Free beer, red beans and rice, and jambalaya. Uh, thank you very much. Really though. Virg was waiting for us and taking pictures as well as being a super Sherpa. Hung out with her waiting for Row to finish up. So proud of her for toughing out a solid first 70.3 in tough conditions. Drank some beers, ate some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

taking it easy? still tough day but I stayed in the zone and played it cool.

Event comments:

Good race for me but my wife is the story here. So very proud of her. Her first tri was a sprint in 2008. Her second tri was this one. After only being on the bike since January-ish she had a great day in tough conditions. So proud.

New Orleans was very interesting. Lots of stories, lots of sights, lots of fun. But the only thing I take away from this weekend was my wife had a good first 70.3 and we had a great weekend.

Well done!  You seem set up for IM this year.... does your sig line really say FOUR IMs?   Hat's off....

And congrats to your wife.  It was definitely tough conditions.

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
