Subject: T1 Question (for guys)
***Sorry ladies, i know some of you are peeking, but I FULLY EXPECT THAT YOU WILL BE WEARING A TOP ON THE SWIM PORTION OF THE RACE AND INTO T1 (LOL)

------------------------

If you are in a race and do not use a wetsuit, how do you get through T1 quickly?

I figure that without a wetsuit I could fly through T1....grab helmet, throw on glasses, grab bike, and jog to exit (shoes clipped in)....BUT, how do I get my tri top on my wet body ?

I tried this once and the shirt rolled up into a knot on my back..URGGGHH !

This is the only thing that makes me think I can't get my time down well under a minute (in the box)

Swim with it on.  I was thinking of doing that at Timberman, not using a wetsuit and just swimming in my one piece tri suit.

I was wondering about this. Time to hit the pool in all my clothes

My Zoot shirt has a tight mesh back and some small pockets in the back. Do you think these will cause drag in the H20 ?

turn the shirt inside out and put a bunch of baby powder on it...then flip it back to right side in. When you go to put it on in T1 it will still stick a little, but not near as much. I'm probably going to start swimming with mine on, because it does add about 20-30 sec to my t1 time.

I thought the whole point of a "tri top" was to wear it for all 3.

That was my understanding as well, otherwise, whats the point in calling it a tri suit?

A tri suit is a one pice affair. I am talking about a Zoot top I have that looks like a sleeveless bike jersey with small pockets on the rear.

If it's a tri top than it's for all three. If it's a Zoot, then I imagine it was designed for the water.

Absolutely right, wear it in the water. Trying to put a top on in T1 is a big waste of time.

Just buy a trisuit unless you really enjoy the pockets on the back of your jersey. No changing whatsoever!

I think I can speak here since I have some pretty fast T1 and T2 times.

I wear a two piece tri suit like the one in my avatar. I wear it the whole time.... that is what they are designed for, when I come out of the water, I run to the bike put on helmet, glasses and run with my bike to the mat, hop on peddal with my feet on the shoes and when I get up to a good speed (around 15) I slip my feet in my shoes, strap them down and off I go.

Your tri top is supposed to be worn for all 3 parts of the race.

I like to race with a one piece suit and it works very well. But I'll use a 2 piece suit for Timberman and I am going to swim with the top on.

<<<< Look at my avatar - that's how I swim, bike and run

Man Jorge, I don't know how you can crank out the times you do in the swim and run when you are all bent over like that and wearing a helmet to boot!! ;P

I have the two piece tri suit and wear both parts in all three, in addition I put my hrm strap on before the race and the number belt as well. The number belt I put just below my hrm strap and turn the strap around so the number is in back. I've been in races where they require you to have your # on the bike and I can just pull it down after I am on the bike, then move it to the front for the run.

You should see the looks he gets when he exits the water and he's towing the bike behind him!

If you must swim "sans top", try rolling it up and pulling it up from your feet once in T1. Most of the lycra tops will stretch enough to get over your shoulders quickly and easily. Then, it's like putting on a pair of bibs for cycling - no rolling on the back and dislocating your shoulder trying to pull it down.

The one I have causes some drag, Desoto. I will usually fold the top down into my shorts and pull it up later in the race (looks like a singlet but a lot tighter). I usually pull it up when starting the run....on the bike I just leave it down and go without a shirt.

Just swim with it on.  If it's a true Tri-specific top the pockets will only give you minimal drag.  I wear the QR fast top for races and, if for some reason wetsuits are not allowed (i.e. warm water conditions) I find it doesn't slow me down much.  The time wasted trying to put a shirt on in T1 has a higher impact on your time than a little drag in the water.
