Question for Iron veterans or those deep into iron distance training:

When you get to your peak build week and are running long runs of 18-20 miles (or whatever), how do your legs feel at the end of those runs? Are they achy and hammered or do longs runs feel easy and comfortable by that point in training?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa.

anytime I went over 16 miles in my build to IM last year my legs were cashed out afterwards.  Really comforting feeling as you build up to the IM Run distance.

Obviously it depends on a lot of things:  weather, hydration, heat, humidity, sleep last night, nutrition, etc but in most cases I was simply tired after those long runs.

Most of my long runs were on Sundays the day after a long ride (4-5 hours) and a 1 hour OTB run on Saturdays.

They should feel good enough that it doesn't compromise training over the next couple of days.

I strained by lower back last week. I know that I need to rest in order for it to heal fully, but I am concerned that I am going to lose needed fitness for the race. Will this affect my performance?

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
