Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 27/261
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/19
Pre-race routine:

Local tri at my gym. Home race literally. And my wife's first ever tri. So Up a litle early with her. Got on site by 7; helped her with her transition area, get her chip and body marked. Then we split up from there.

Event warmup:

Ran a half mile or so and did some activation. Goal was to work my legs a bit. hit the bathroom then swam 200 yards. Had about 20 mins to get my head in the game.
Swim
  • 08m 25s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Typical pool swim - passed 4 people and passed by no one. Good swim given how my swimming has gone.
What would you do differently?:

Not much - I have not swum nearly as much as last year to this point but my time was exactly the same as last year.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Was having a great T1 but forgot my helmet; amazingly stupid. Cost me a good 15 seconds to put it on after the fact
What would you do differently?:

Faster than last year still
Bike
  • 36m 2s
  • 20 kms
  • 33.30 km/hr
Comments:

New bike and was a good bit faster than last year by 47 seconds on the same course - very good ride
What would you do differently?:

Not much - have not been out much due to the cold. The guy who won my age group was behind out of the water and he took off. I caught him 10 miles in. He still had 30 seconds on me but it was great rabbit to chase
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Faster by 23 seconds over last year
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - was racing the guy who won my age group
Run
  • 24m 18s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 52s  min/km
Comments:

Huge improvement in my running. I dropped over 2 minutes from last year. All of the running has paid off. First .5 miles was rough but had to just push through. Never did feel comfortable on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - ran with the AG winner for the first two plus miles then he left me coming up the big hill. I had nothing to be ashamed of.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much = once I finished and saw my results started looking for my wife and kids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was 3 and half mins faster than last year and blew away my goals,

Event comments:

This race was much smaller than last year - not sure why. The split between JRC and Setup? More races in the area? Some of the guys I raced against int he past had raced already Halfs earlier.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
