Subject: What is your go-to daily snack?
Proper nutrition has always been my Achilles heel. I try & take in the proper amount of healthy calories to offset what I burn in my daily training, but sometimes it gets hard to find time to get it all in. Sometimes I have to eat whatever is on hand or easy to grab. Having two small kids, my pantry is filled with plenty of temptations that are not good for me to snack on & I find myself diving into crap snacks more often than not. I try & snack healthy, but grabbing a handful of cookies, m&ms, or goldfish is just easier. I would like to snack a lot better, but I'm not sure what the best thing is for me to grab.

What is your go-to snack food? Do you snack with a purpose or do you see snacking as an indulgence where you can cheat?

Definitely see snacking as part of my overall nutrition. Like every other triathlete, I need to eat what seems like an ungodly amount of food, so "snack" is probably a misnomer.

Still, I always have a bag of almonds, walnuts, dried cranberries and raisins on hand. Good mix of fat, carbs and protein. When I say "bag," I mean like 5/600 calories of it, which unfortunately only lasts me about 3 hours until I'm hungry again…but that's for another forum.

Other easy things to eat are apples, bags of tuna, popcorn or baby carrots.

In the terms of "go-to"

Bananas
PB&J
Almonds and choc chips
Avocado
Yogurt (shy away from the low-fat stuff)

I like to load up on fats in my snacking so I usually gravitate t the avocado/almond selections

Peanut butter and honey on a saltine.

About a 4:1 ratio of PB to honey, approximately one tablespoon per cracker.

I have three mid morning, then three plus an Apple after my afternoon workout. I keep it at my desk, no refrigeration and no mess.

Recently that is.  They were buy one get one at the local grocery store and couldn't resist.  When I feel that need something sweet urge one or two fill the need and with a glass of water give me a satisfying snack. They've become a pre workout snack too.

A banana with sunflower seed butter is my daily pre-workout snack.

If I get munchy in the afternoon, I almost always have nuts on hand, or an apple.

And I eat more than my share of dark chocolate!

why not change your snacks for your kids and then your go to options won't be goldfish or m&ms

Because I don't want my children to murder me in my sleep & I also don't want them to grow up as those weird kids who eat alfalfa sprouts at Halloween.

Any combination of mixed nuts and dried fruit from Trader Joes is my go-to. High in protein, fat, and goodness.
