Has anyone tried the Original LED light vest. I do most of my running before dawn and was looking for a better light (for trail running especially). This looks like it has plenty of light, but I did not know how it performed.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

I can see wearing the vest running on the road, but why on earth do you need to be seen on the trail? It's not designed to light up the path, but to make you visible to traffic at a further distance than reflexes.

The light vest does provide forward light.

Well, that's what's claimed, but in reality, it's not really designed to illuminate the path. It's about visibility.

Looked up their product, the specs say that the 12 LEDs put out 60,000 mcd (millicandella) of light. Usually bike light companies use lumen for light.

I think that converts to about 100 lumen, swagging the beam angle at 90 degrees.

That's on the high end of the range for LED headlamps, BUT they tend to have more of a spot mode, so I think you'd get more intensity over a smaller area with a headlamp. I've run and mountain bike both on and off road with headlamps, they're nice since the beam is where you're looking all the time.

It seems the vest would also get shadows from your arms/hands as you run, which I would think would be annoying if you need the light to not trip or fall over anything. Also the light would be where your torso is aiming, though it would be more of a flood light (as they call it, a puddle)

I'd consider a vest for being-seen, but not to be able to see.

A bike is NOT a piece of metal with a couple of wheels at either end and a steering thing to stop you running over old ladies. No! ... a bike is a space-age “weapon of mass confusion.”
