Goose.

Out for a 12-miler today in beautiful sunny weather, and there were a few Canadian geese hanging around. I try to stay far away from them but apparently my "far away" wasn't far enough for one of them. He hissed at me, and I said out loud to him, "I'm not going to hurt you, it's OK." Then... he charged at me!

I did the only thing I could do: scream very loudly and start running in the other direction. Of course there was a whole bunch of traffic at that time, most likely laughing at the woman being chased by a goose. He eventually gave up the chase and my heart rate eventually came down from that surprise fartlek.

Be careful of nesting waterfowl out there!

Gotta admit it's kind of a funny image--but yeah, geese can be mean & nasty critters.

At the store that I work at we were not getting any customers for about an hour which is very unusual. A customer called to inform us that three geese were out front guarding the door. The geese were letting no one near the automatic doors period. When we tried to move them on they attacked us.

It took a couple of us and several brooms to dissuade them to move. As soon as we went back in the store they returned to guard the door. After about 30 minutes and several more advances by store employees they finally flew away.

It's the season!

I am sad to say I have yet to be hissed at by an angry goose this year. I'm sure it will happen sooner than later.

I got chased by a goose during an adventure race - mother goose decided to lay her eggs next to the checkpoint marker.

The trails where I run don't have a lot of runoff room, so I have go with the intimidation factor. During an encounter I would stand up real tall, spread my arms out and honk. It would definitely get the geese moving, not to mention puzzle curious onlookers.

Did you hit it intentionally? Can't see why you went off the road.

I've had a lot of encounters with geese on golf courses but I always let them be since I figure they were probably there first and all. I did have a turkey run/fly/stumble at me on my bike the other day though. I saw him and his cronies from a bit down the road and one of them started gobbling at me, you know that angry kind of gobble, and he half flew or tripped with his wings out or something and went right at my rear wheel. I was glad he didn't hit me because it would have made quite the mess. Then all 3 of them kind of stood in the road just gobbling at me while I road away, kind of like an old man telling kids to get off his lawn.

I have had many encounters with geese on my runs and try to give them a wide berth.  If you get into their "zone" they can be pretty nasty.

I can honestly say that I can't imagine running from a goose. I mean, what is he going to do once he catches you? Stand your ground!

I think it's a bad idea to run from charging animals in general. I stood my ground once against a large pit bull and he backed down. I don't know how that would have ended if he would have followed through with the attack, but I win the battle with the goose 10 times out of 10.

The geese in Chicago won't even acknowledge you...unless they're protecting their young. Will not move or give ground.

Was way up norther on a trail on Sat and came across a beaver. He took off down the path, and thought I was chasing him. He finally turned around to hold his ground. That was one pissed off beaver. Didn't like running.

Geese are nothing to eff with! I have come across plenty in my life. The worst was one time playing golf I walked up to the edge of a water hazard to hit my second shot & two geese came flying out from behind a tree charging & hissing at me with their wings spread wide. I hadn't seen them before that, so they completely startled me. I nearly fell in the water & my buddy on the other side of the fairway was laughing hysterically. He eventually gave me a free drop because they wouldn't let me near my ball. Guess they thought it was an egg!

I also get chased off by these creatures every once in a while. I just hate that hissing sound so I try to run around them, but they can chase you too. Leave me alone!

He came running at me hissing, wings flapping -- I sure wasn't going to stick around to find out!

had that happen with two different ones yesterday on my run...minding my own business a good solid 5 plus feet away and one came charging at me, first thing I thought of was to kick it in the face...second goose did that same damn thing not 20 seconds later...got that one square in the face with the bottom of my shoe, helped playing soccer growing up with the foot/eye coordination...

Now that's what I'm talking about. Hopefully you may have taught the bird that sometimes these humans don't just run, they can fight back.

.... Right, because thats something that geese who are just trying to protect their offspring really need to "learn"

I don't know how many geese I've killed in my life..........it's in the multiple thousands if I consider all that have been killed on hunting trips I've been on.  One more won't ruin my day.

To all geese, an open plea:

I'm trying real hard to let bygones be bygones.  I miss eating you, and I miss shooting you......but I'm OK with letting it go.  Don't push me.
