East Coast Super Sprint Triathlon - Triathlon

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Glen Allen, Virginia
United States
Endorphin Fitness in cooperation with Set Up Events
60F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 52m 13s
Overall Rank = 25/54
Age Group = 50-55
Age Group Rank = 2/
Pre-race routine:

Up far too early for my liking. Drove to Glen Allen. Got marked & set up transition. Hit the portapotties....
Event warmup:

Walking around. Didn't want to get in the water then have to wait all cold for 20 minutes for my wave to go off. Not sure if that helped or not.
Swim
  • 10m 48s
  • 375 meters
  • 02m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started off feeling pretty good and keeping up well with the pack. Somewhere just before the first buoy I got a mouthful of water and it took my breath/ rhythm right out the window. Never panicked or needed to hug a kayak....but never regained my rhythm.
I backstroked to the turn buoy with only one redirection from the support crew. Got my breathing back to a manageable level but the wetsuit felt like it was choking me. (which is strange cause I swam in it yesterday at the pre swim). I slowly made my way back to the dock to finish.
Disappointed that I couldn't manage to stay in free style--but happy that I kept going without a freak out and that I stayed with the wave.
What would you do differently?:

I didn't get to the pre swim on time yesterday to swim farther. Mom duties called and they take priority. More of a pre swim would be better....Learn to keep swimming when I get a mouthful of water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

Goggles & cap off, wetsuit most of the way down by the time I got to my rack.
What would you do differently?:

Run earlier in the post swim transition. I walked the first half of transition to catch my breath and get past a group of women.
Bike
  • 22m 14s
  • 10 kms
  • 26.99 km/hr
Comments:

Two big mistakes here. Forgot to bring water for the bike was number one--since it was such a short race that was not a huge issue. Second mistake probably cost me more: Didn't ride Lola after getting her back from a tune up. Gears were kind of quirky, like it wasn't fully engaged but I couldn't reset things so I just kept riding as long as it was working (just a bit noisily for me) It's a very flat course--but somewhat technical with the reverse B shape so the turns were a challenge. I'm not comfortable staying full aero in turns and with all the corners and one hairpin turn I had to lose my optimal position a bit. Got passed by one woman in my AG on the first loop, retook her toward the end of that loop. She got me again near the end of the second loop.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up on my bike to check the gearing. Get more comfortable cornering in aero.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

No issues, should have run sock less.
What would you do differently?:

no socks for a short run like this
Run
  • 15m 4s
  • 2.5 kms
  • 06m 02s  min/km
Comments:

I got out of T2 just behind that woman who passed me on the bike. Passed her by the water stop and never saw her come near me again. Felt strong, picked off a lot of other people and just cranked it out.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked over to get water. There was a massage table set up so I signed up. Cleared my transition area since they needed to have it ready for the junior elite females who would be racing after us.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rough swim with that mouthful of water, quirky gears and corners on the bike.

Event comments:

A good early season race to practice OWS, transitions and such. Fun event and well organized. There were at least 4 kayaks plus a couple of paddle boards out on the lake for the swim.
For a short course race there were more than adequate police and other volunteers on the intersections/ turns. Hay bales and cones to clearly mark turns.

I was there, and looking at your finish pic I saw you headed out to the run when we were walking up to the race site. You looked great, nice job!  Did you stick around to watch any of the Jr. Elite races?

I remembered that morning that you were there last year and wished I would have hit you up before we left home on Thursday morning.

Congratulations!

Thanks!  We couldn't stick around.  My daughter had a performance that afternoon and I had to get home to get presentable for a show choir afternoon.

Cotswold super sprint - UK. Lots of bodies colliding, I swam half over someone, got kicked by some bloody breaststroker, and as a mob we poured towards the first buoy.

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.
