Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am. Breakfast on way to event consisting of 1 1/2 Clif Bar and OJ. Arrived at T2. Set up T2 and went to catch shuttle bus to Swim Start/T1. Long line already at 6:15 and buses no where in sight. Finally caught a bus after the first one filled up. Many people still waiting on a bus at that time. Arrived and setup T2.
Event warmup:

Went on a short run, hit the port-o-potty and then sqeezed into wetsuit. Jogged down to Swim exit to drop off shoes and walked over to the swim start to hear the announcer saying 1 minute until my wave went off. Panic!
Swim

  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had someone zipping me up with 5 seconds to go. Putting on swim cap as I walked down the beach into the water. Water felt fine, but it took me a while to find a groove. I was probably a little faster than a few of the people, but couldn't get into a groove to get by anyone. Sighting pretty good to first turn. Had trouble seeing the buoys on the second leg since the sun was shining directly into my eyes. Luckily I could just follow all the pink caps in my wave since I was behind everyone. Rounded the last turn and was confused if I should go around the two orange buoys on the way in since some seemed to be cutting them off. Went around the buoys and tried to pick it up coming home.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to work on my swimming. Should also have been down to start earlier. Thought I had plenty of time since they were running behind, but no one in T2 had any start time updates. My fault for not getting down there sooner.
Transition 1

Comments:

.31 miles from swim end to bike exit, all uphill. Put on shoes at swim exit, pulled wetsuit half way down and ran to T1. Wetsuit off pretty good, caught up a little on ankles/feet. Stuffed everthing in trash bag. Sunglasses, helmet, shoes on and out of T1. Actually had the best time in my AG (first time ever!).
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 5s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 19.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Very hilly. Max speed 43.4 down the biggest hill and under 10 up the final climb near the finish. Averaged 19.1, goal was 19. Happy with the bike ride.
What would you do differently?:

Would like to be in better shape and be able to average 20 mph on that course.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Left watch on bike and had to come back for it. Probably 15 seconds delay. 4th best T2 time.
What would you do differently?:

Don't forget watch.
Run
  • 53m 33s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 22s  min/km
Comments:

Felt pretty good at the start of the run. Hit 3 miles and thought I was going to have a great run and beat my goal time. Came around the corner and then had to go up a long steep hill. Times dropped off after that. Goal was 8:30 miles, averaged 8:36.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe could have eaten another gel during to run to give me more energy at the end. Mentally, I was drained the last 2 miles of the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a water and some oranges. Went to physical therapy tent for some work on hamstring and hip flexor.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more training.

Event comments:

This race can be a 5 with a better plan for getting people from T2 to swim start. Very tough course so you will be challenged.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
