Total Time = 1h 05m 25s
Overall Rank = 158/855
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 16/83
Pre-race routine:

Caught a flu bug earlier in the week, and debated wheter or not to show up when the alarm went off. Decided to give it a go. Packed and rode the bike over the the start.
Event warmup:

Bike ride to the park takes about 20-minutes. That's the only warm-up for me.

Swim
  • 12m 54s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

First time swimming since the broken collar bone back in August. All around this was my worst tri swim since my first year, but with no time in the pool, you kind of expect this type of result.
What would you do differently?:

Time in the pool.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Good transition. Took a little extra time to dry the feet and put on socks.
Bike
  • 28m 5s
  • 10.6 miles
  • 22.65 mile/hr
Comments:

I never seemed to really get in a groove for this ride. Results were okay, but about one mph below what they should have been.

Referee talked about a no passign zone during the rules briefing, but the packet and web site did a very poor job describing this area. I rode for a mile ot two not sure if I was in the "zone" or not. I did see one sign calling out a beginning to the zone, but I never saw a sign marking the end. I did have two guys yell at me while I passed them, but the course was two lanes wide at this point and definately safe for passing. VERY CONFUSING!
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Good transition. Tough for me to get much faster without some sort of slip-on tri running shoe.
Run
  • 22m 8s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Good run for me. Pushed fairly hard, but should be able to do better.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder in the middle of the course.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sickness, and lack of swim training. My wife thinks that last week's 50-mile Brazos Bend run probably also slowed my down, but I didn't feel too fatigued...just a little feverish from the flu bug!

Event comments:

Great sprint distance race. Course was a little lacking this year due to road construction, but it was very well organized and a great venue on the North Side of Houston.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

A product review of the Louis Garneau Tri Air Triathlon Shoe. After nearly two years of testing, see how this shoe performed. Currently being replaced by the Tri Air 2.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
