Total Time = 1h 39m 7s
Overall Rank = 295/433
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 30/38
Pre-race routine:

Still attempting to become an ultra distance runner. Most runs leading up to this event were in the long and slow category.
Event warmup:

The usual - none.
Run
  • 32m 55s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

No land speed records here. Slow and steady, kept a pretty good pace knowing that I needed to have something left for the bake and 2nd run.
What would you do differently?:

Add in some sprint training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Used two pairs of running shoes, started in my Brooks Adrenaline's. Came in and was out of the shoes quickly. Because of the 2 run legs, I wore socks whereas I normally don't for a tri. I also normally have my bike cleats clipped onto the pedals but because of the socks, I put on my cleats in T1 and just rubber banded my left pedal in position to step on when jumping in the bike. This worked well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, the changes to my normal routine worked well.
Bike
  • 29m 42s
  • 9.5 miles
  • 19.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Better than I expected since I had ridden by bike exactly once in 2014.
What would you do differently?:

RIDE MORE!
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Went with my normal dismount and just ran in my socks back to the rack. Put on the Saucony Fast Twitch's and I was off. Knew the second run was going to suck!!! Could already feel the fatigue in the legs.
What would you do differently?:

Stop signing up for duathlons.
Run
  • 33m 39s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Surprisingly the long slow runs had prepared me for the runs. Once I got going, I got into a rhythm and just kept moving. Didn't stop or walk and even though my time was slightly slower than run 1, my age group and overall place was much better.
What would you do differently?:

The usual, train more.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, shade, shower, change.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training, especially not including speed work and not spending time on the bike.

Event comments:

My only complaint is that this race does not offer a Clydesdale division. Everything else about this race is top notch.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

My first duathlon was a success. I had so many fears before the race but none of those fears happened. And when it was all over, I felt I had accomplished something big.

This program should be used for an athlete who is new to duathlon and their goal is to complete a sprint duathlon without difficulty. The schedule consists of 3 workouts per week in each sport.

"I was wondering if this is a sensible approach? Should I get "better" on short distance and then move to something longer or do what I want if I feel I can do it whatever the time?"

Bricks refer to training on two disciplines during the same workout.
