Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6AM and had the bagel and latte that Mike was nice enough to pick up for me. Setup in transition, then hung around with Mike for a bit.
Event warmup:

Around 8:15 I hopped in the lake to do some practice swimming. I actually didn't find the water to be as cold as I was expecting. The bigger issue was that my wetsuit was really constricting. I still haven't done much to lose the 10 lbs or so that I should to make it more comfortable...
Swim
  • 12m 6s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

This actually went better than I'd expected. Definitely still a poor performance for the average triathlete, but this was close to my best time on this course. I also wasn't in the bottom 20% of my AG, which I tend to do a lot.
What would you do differently?:

I haven't done much swimming over the past month, so that probably would have helped if I had. It would also help if I could practice more in my wetsuit prior to the race, but it's too cold around here for that. I should also lose some weight so it's not as tight!
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Felt okay running to T1 out of the water, but as soon as I tried to start putting on my shoes, I realized I was pretty disoriented and almost fell down. Managed to get changed, but likely wasn't as fast as I could have been.
Bike
  • 27m 59s
  • 8.3 miles
  • 17.80 mile/hr
Comments:

I'd hoped my pace would have been a bit faster, but I did go on a 4 hour ride yesterday, so my legs were kind of tired, especially on the hills. Wind was a bit gusty in places too and I had to hold on tight!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. It would have been nice to be more rested up, but training for my longer races/rides is more important at the moment...
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

This went a bit smoother than T1, although I always have trouble yanking on my shoes and today was no different...
Run
  • 24m 31s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Fairly solid run. As with the bike, my legs were a bit tired from training this past week, but my main goal was to get my average pace under 8 min/mile and I was able to eek that out at least. Felt kind like I wanted to puke rounding the final corner, so I seem to have given it my all for today.
Post race
Warm down:

Found out I was 3rd in my AG so I stuck around for the awards with Mike. It was a beautiful day, so it was nice to relax for a bit before heading back.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm training for an HIM in early June, so I wasn't able to recover from my relatively high volume week. I'll get to do this course again in September for Title 9, so I'll hopefully be better rested then!

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.
