Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am, Ate a cliff bar, showered, stretched, walked to transition
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 2h 07m 16s
  • 3862 meters
  • 03m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

First OWS of the season. Did lots of unilateral breathing just to keep my HR down... I only train with bilateral. At the first turn around, I knew I would make the cut-off so I didn't spend much time in front crawl.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time in front crawl.
Transition 1
  • 11m 14s
Bike
  • 7h 10m 14s
  • 112 miles
  • 15.62 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a rear flat in the morning while airing up my tires. I blew that new tube on mile 45, tech was out VERY fast to assist. My chain fell off the front ring twice. Bike SN lost my bag :/
What would you do differently?:

I will have brand new tires for all full IM races going forward.
Transition 2
  • 07m 39s
Comments:

Volunteers racked my bike and called for my bag but I ended up having to find my own bag.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Run
  • 6h 07m 13s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 14m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

I walked the first 5 miles then jogged the last 4 miles of each loop. I felt amazing until the last loop... blisters and an upset tummy slowed me down. Still ended up my strongest discipline.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

NONE. Walked around town finding my gear.

Event comments:

Tremendous crowd support on the run course. It was amazing.

Often it makes sense to race slower in order to finish faster and at the same time have a more enjoyable Ironman Triathlon experience.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

I never imagined that 350 yards broken down into 7 REALLY long lanes would be so big! I gasped out loud and told Grady that maybe I had underestimated the swim.

If a heart patient can do these things, then so can those of you who haven't been split open like a fish and sewn back together.
