Overcast
Total Time = 1h 04m 26s
Overall Rank = 14/166
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/21
Pre-race routine:

Got up with the wife at 4:45, had steel cut oats and coffee and headed for the race. got to the site at 6:00 and did all the normal stuff. at 6:15 took anti-fatigue tablets and at 7:00 took 1st gu.
Event warmup:

rode 3 miles around the park then swam 200 meters. had a friend come down to learn about triathlon, so I spent a bit of time explaining him all the nuances of triathlon, transition, and nutrition.
Swim
  • 09m 35s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

i decided to keep the same strategy i used at clemson triathlon by moving at a good clip and keep the breathing every 3rd stroke. after the first 200 i needed some every other stroke breathing but was able to keep it under control the whole swim. my navigation was spot on; i used the cooper river bridge pillar and n orange tent as navigation aids. for the back 100m i was able to draft that length which helped pick up my speed.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

normal t1 nothing significant.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 31m 38s
  • 12 miles
  • 22.76 mile/hr
Comments:

this bike was my fastest on record. i knew going into the race i would need to open up a 2-3 minute gap on the guys in my age group becuase the were stronger runners than me. i was only able to open up 1:30-2 minute gaps and they eventually caught me on the run. i wore the pearl izumi octane tri suit and it performed amazing in the cool and wet. I used HED trispoke wheels front and rear for this race.
What would you do differently?:

nothing, use trispokes front and rear.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

so a volunteer accidentally waved me into the run finish not the bike finish, this caused me to almost crashed when my shoe flipped upside down and drug on the ground. in t2 my bike fell off the rack and landed all over my wifes gear. normally i wouldnt care to much about it but she would have killed me if my junk slowed her transition down.
What would you do differently?:

not listen to volunteers and make sure that the bike stays put on the rack.
Run
  • 21m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

compared to everyone else the run wasnt very good but for me the run was excellent. i pushed as hard as i could knowing that i needed to have a fast pace to not get eaten up on the run. at 2 and 2.25 miles i got passed by guys running 18 minute 5k's. my lltime best 5k is 19:45.
What would you do differently?:

nothing, started speed work at the track and this is one of my top 3 triathlon 5k's all time.
Post race
Warm down:

caught up with the family, ran .5 miles with the wife and her sister which helped her get a 24:06 5k (her new pr)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing, this is my best csts race ever. history recap:
2008 best 1:11:09
2012 best 1:07:44
2013 best 1:06:29

so shaving 2 minutes off was amazing!

Event comments:

the post race awards was too long winded (seems to get longer every year) but if thats the worst complaint then thats not so bad.

I'm not quite half way into my IM training. I just raced a sprint and on Monday I woke up and felt like I'd been drugged! Not sore, just incredibly fatigued.
