I've lived in New Orleans all my life. I know heat and humidity. But, I don't think I've ever sweat as much as I have this past month. While running, I look down at my arms and they are dripping with sweat, I feel it running down my legs. My clothes are completely soaked. My shoes stay wet. IS THIS NORMAL?? Can your sweat rate increase as you get older?

I guess it sounds weird. Just wondering- is it me, or is it global warming

I think it's just brutally hot here.   When hubby and I go running, he brings a second pair of running shoes to swap out mid-run.  Otherwise they get so sweaty his feet are sloshing.   If we're not out the door running by 6 a.m. forget it.

I don't ever remember it being so hot, but then again about 2 years ago I was a couch potato.  However, I don't ever recall temps reaching the 100s as early as May.  So I'm guessing we're just having a wicked hot season.   Looking forward to this Fall!

I'm only about three hours from you guys and I SWEAT! Even inside, in the air conditioning, when I run on the treadmill sweat just flies everywhere. So feminine! And outside? This time of year? I might as well just dump a bucket of water on my head.

Yes, I think I sweat more than I did when I was younger, but I also exercise more so who knows?

I complain with it's 75 during my runs, but at least there's no humidity.

I would dehydrate after a mile in the NO heat. Keep drinking that H2O.

Yeah, especially after a brick of run/bike, even inside the gym on the treadmill and stationary.

People come in to powerwalk and watch their TV show at night and I'm flinging sweat across the room like some abstract artist.

Pretty bad.

In Wisconsin the length of time where it is hot is not nearly as long as you have there and we almost never get over 100 but this year we have had a number of days in the upper 80s to low to mid 90s and we have a lot of humidity. I can relate with the heat to a certain extent although not as extreme but I sweat a lot here. I don't mind it. It kind of makes me feel more accomplished. If I am sweating that means I must be working and if I'm working, I must be building speed/stamina and isn't that why I am out there? Also, it's when I stop sweating that I start to worry so keep drinking and sweat away!!

I guess what I'm saying is don't sweat it. Uh, I mean don't sweat about the sweating. Well you know...

I did my longest ride yesterday preparing for IMWI next month. Total time was 6 hrs. and 45 mins. on the bike. I went through 10 (24) ounce bottles of liquid, plus a 70 oz. Camelback. It was so freakin' hot and humid, just stupid. It was much easier training in 115 degrees in the desert in Vegas. I feel your pain.

I don't know if your inherent sweat rate changes, but of course you sweat more or less depending upon conditions. If you're not having performance issues, and you're not cramping up or having other symptoms, I wouldn't worry about it. Sweat is good. My sweat rate is pretty high and I was having some issues with the heat. I finally found a sports drink with enough salt to keep up, and I have been using it for a few weeks.  The site for the product I use has some good info as well:

http://www.infinitnutrition.com

I keep dropping their name, but it's great stuff.

I have been a female athlete most of my life, and in High school I would sweat as much as the boys I was training with. I totally sweat like a guy! I have not seen a significant increase in sweat with age...only with weather conditions and training intensity.

(Of course I have lived all my life in the south along the coast, so I really don't know anything different.)

I sweat a lot too.  I don't really have much more to add than that.

I sweat A LOT as well (the little cup holder on the treadmill gets about 1/4 full during a 5 miler). The thing that seems to change my rate the most are time of day, what I have eaten and current hydration status.

My sweat rate has gone up as I've become fitter which I guess is common per my coach. I need to hydrate more than 50% more per hour this year compared to last year.

Has your fitness changed since last year? You look like you are incredible shape from your little pix.

If sweat rate increases with fitness level, then that makes sense. I trained for first IM which was in June, and that was highest level intensity training ever (duh).

Only 2 MORE MONTHS of this heat (O.K. beginning of October is not that bad, I guess)
holy crap

OK, sorry...

My sweat rate is so high, I have to hose my shoes off after every other run and stuff them with newspapers, or wifey (Mrs Fish) wont let me bring them in the house.

My sweat rate is high too. I lose 74.4 oz per hour on a run, which is around 4.5 pounds. It's very difficult to replace that much fluid on runs

I had no idea that sweating increased as your fitness level increases. This makes me happy. I just assumed the negative....that it was because I'm getting older. You guys just made my day! I'm usually pretty embarrassed with I run on the treadmill. Sweat flies everywhere. My arms sweat....my legs sweat. From now on I'm not going to be embarrassed about it.

I'm in Mississippi and I'm sweating buckets, too! I can't run with a cotton t-shirt anymore because it ends up getting soaked and heavy after the first mile! I've started running in the afternoon, though, because I've found that my morning workouts left me sweating even after my shower. Yuck!

I am in GA and just finished a long run.  I couldn't believe how sweaty I got.  I think the clothes are still in the sink...so they will not get everything else wet in the dirty clothes pile.
