I'm sure this question or even poll has been banged to death but please indulge me and if you have time give us your experience of how you think choosing the bike you did helped/hurt your ride. Even better if you have experience trying a 70.3 or Ironman with both a tri AND a road bike.

Options are if you rode on a tri bike, road bike with aero bars, or road bike without aero bars.

I've done both.  The one I chose to use a road bike for was when it was early in the season and I hadn't spent enough time on my tri bike to be aero for any length of time.  Comfort wise it was the right choice but I did miss the bigger crank on my tri bike when it was flat with a tail wind!

I used a road bike with shorty aero bars for my first HIM. I would have been a tad faster with a tri bike, but that's all I had at the time. Looking back, I should have ditched the aero bars and just used it as a roadie. They made no difference.

First IM I used a tri bike. I used the same tri bike in my HIM last weekend.

I prefer the triathlon bike for racing now, but I like to ride around on my road bike.

I've done a HIM and IM on a road bike with no aero bars. I've also done a HIM with my road bike and shorty aero bars. (and since you asked, I've also done a HIM on a hybrid bike, but that wasn't one of your options...)

I'm sure a tri bike would be faster, but since I only do 2-3 races per year these days (at most), I can't justify the investment.

I have a nice Trek roadie that I have added aero bars to that I have done two HIM in, and will use next year at IMTX. This sport is expensive enough, and I am MOP at best, so as much as I would love a tri bike, I use what I have. However, I did think my road bike was nice to have in St. George with all the climbing.

I did my first 70.3 on my Cannondale SuperSix road bike with Clip-on Aerobars. I will be using it again at the Boulder 70.3 and IM Boulder.

If IM Boulder goes well I may consider a Tri Bike next year, however right now it is hard to justify the cost.

Are you trying to decide on getting a tri bike or trying to decide between tri bike and road bike?

On the first, people do fine in long course with a road bike set up as such. On the second, it's tri bike all the way. There are few situations where the road bike would be better.

My first Ironman was on a tri bike with road bars.  I don't see that on the list.  I took the bullhorns off and added drop bars.  Removed the bar end shifters and added STI brake leavers.  It still had a tri fit, but I could ride it on group rides.

There is no Ironman or 70.3 in North America in which a tri bike would not be an overwhelming advantage over a road bike.  Not one course.

A debate could be made for some of the more technical courses in Europe but even that's just debate.

I always rode my tri bike for all my HIMs and for my only IM. I think I have a good position on the bike that I can hold for as long as needed and that gives me an aero advantage vs a road bike.

I didn't any race with monster hills or very technical bike course, where I would've maybe considered going with a road bike, but I don't see any race in North America where that will be the case.

The triathlon bike vs. road bike quandary. Before you even ask the road bike vs. tri bike question, you should have a couple sprint triathlons or duathlons under your belt.
